Jimmmeh, Accomodation this year has been rather funny, because as wiio says of the typewriter refurb. I think, in the past, matric offers (and also I think choral scholars, which I am one of) would go in Y or Z, and other first years would be in New Court.

And I'm pretty sure the sports ground is somewhere Girton-way. NOt that I have ever been, or ever likley to go near there!

I'm a 2nd year so I experienced what I think is 'normal' fresher allocation. Half of us were in New Court, a third or so in Y, a few in 4 and Z and a few lucky ones in random nice rooms around the college.

I'm pretty sure the college (idiotically) sold off the sports fields for a housing development last year. Sorry.

In first year all rooms are randomly allocated, so I'm afraid you don't get much choice. But rest assured as a matric offer holder, college WILL give you a very nice room - it's what they do. And you will be around other first years.

Are you sure? Matric offers in my year didn't work like that; a higher proportion of those in particularly nice rooms seemed to be matric people, but not ALL were, while there were plenty matric people in New Court and Y.

Well the only matric-er I know who has a crap room is one who got a two B's at a level anway. Maybe its allocated on the number of AEAs. Or maybe just random....

And I like Y. It's better than Z, imho
Hi! My offer's for English...specifically A's in English Lit, Biology, and History, and a distinction in AEA English. Anyone else had such...um...challenging conditions?

And, should I not meet these grades (my self esteem is so terribly low) what should I say to the admissions office on the phone? Fortunately it doesn't look like Christ's often reject English students, so they must think I'm capable.

Finally some one from Christ's with a 'realistic' offer! (after seeing all those with EE offers!) My offer specifies A's in Further Maths, Physics, Economics and Business Studies, on top of the A in AL Maths I got last year; I've been working my a** off since I got the letter.

Before I applied, I was aware of Christ's giving 'challenging' conditions to those who are not given EE, so I decided not to declare any AEAs and I dropped one AS subject before I sent my application.

To answer your question, I think the best strategy is to work hard from now on (this is what Im doing after 3 months of doing nothing) and get grades they ask for.

Good luck studying  Hopefully we'll meet in October.
Ah...hard work. Well, I'll be doing my best and crossing my fingers. I wish I had done like you! Although then I may not have got an offer.

Good luck to you too, and see you in October if all goes well...

pretty much the same question that's being asked on the general cambridge forum, but I'd like to know for christ's specifically...how is the vegetarian food?

also, there hasnt been any activity on here for ages (especially compared to the other colleges)! is christ's really this boring lol  ?

oh and does anyone have any update on the new court refurbishment and whether it will be ready for october?
Reply 327
there is veggie food at every meal and i think it's usally okay, defo no better or worse on average than the standard option. i have it when i don't like the meat dish and there's no real difference in standard, (nor do I think) variety

who knows, maybe christ's people are just too cool than to spend time on TSR (apart from me lol)

as for new court, the latest i've heard is that all the accom will be ready for the start of term - though there might be some delay in the other rooms such as the common room and theatre. we now have the kitchens reopen though and upper hall so that's all rather nice

also, is it standard to be able to get wireless internet in rooms?

got ma christs letter the other day, it said pplz from UK (eg moi - grades permitting  ) have to come in on the 5th of Oct, and it says term starts 7th of Oct.... - am i being ignorant of something eg "term starts" is not equivalent to "lectures/supervisions etc start" - or is it really true that freshers WEEK has been turned into a ruddy freshers DAY?

someone plz clear this up for me, thnx

We're too busy drinking in the bar...

Some rooms near the office areas can pick up Lapwing (wifi) but every room has a wired ethernet connection that's so, so much faster...

oi oi chill...

"Full Term" is the period where you HAVE to be in residence. It normally runs from the Tuesday before lectures start (which is on a thursday) to the Friday after lectures finish (which is a wednesday). In reality though hardly anybody actually turns up on the tuesday and leaves straight away. People normally turn up on the Sat/Sun before so you get almost a week to catch up with people before lectures start.

When we started we turned up on the sat / sunday, and lectures started on the thursday. It will most likely be the same for you. Freshers week activities will still go on on thursday/friday/saturday though, you won't have any real work, it's more of a 'hello and welcome' thing.

hope that's answered some questions!

do christ's work their students harder than other colleges (english in particular)?
Reply 332
probably not. christ's students may work themselves harder in general. but equally there are those who are more relaxed. it tends to be up to you and your own motivation (see how I'm on TSR and generally not working whilst those around me may be stuck into revision)

i'm assuming we'll get more information on what the deal with freshers week is when we get our results then...glad to hear it won't be just 2 days lol...

Do you have to clear out your room of all your stuff at the end of each term?
Reply 335
possibly. i did at christmas, but not easter. depends if rooms are going to be used for interview candiates/conferences or whatever. your tutor will usually tell you if you need to near the end of term.
Reply 336
does christ's have alot of 'rahs'??
Reply 337
less than most colleges, as a sweeping generalistation. very few 'sloane' type girls for example.
Reply 338
erm what is "sloane" exactly?
