It is possible but those are generally the most expensive rooms and most will probably be taken by scholars. Not many freshers will get one.

I'm not sure exactly how it works for Freshers but from what i can tell, you fill in the rent bands and then you'll randomly be allocated a room based on what you put down. These are the ones which haven't been taken by a scholar. I think some people doing the same subject may sometimes be placed near each other though that could well be coincidence. Most freshers will be near each other in staircases (so we had a lot of freshers in Z, W, Y and New Court but none were in 2nd court or 1st court). Chances are, you'll be in one of those blocks. The room you get will be decent so don't worry

2nd year and 3rd year is different. In 1st year, in Lent term, everyone in the year is placed in a ballot and drawn out randomly. You can ballot with up to 2 others so you'll be drawn out together if you do that. Then you go down the list and pick rooms, with groups of 10 - 20 being allowed to pick on certain days (so for example, 30th Jan - 2nd February, People 1 - 20 pick. Then 3rd February - 7th February, people 21 - 32 would pick). The very last group don't get given rooms till August. The college picks out the available rooms: at least half the year will have to live in College houses in 2nd year but all 3rd years live in college. However, as it's a scholars' ballot, anyone who gets a 1st may pick a scholars' room and that's why the last group don't find out until August. The ballot's reversed for 3rd year (so the person at the top originally has to take the last room in 3rd year)

Haha, I don't have a place just yet! I'm trying to work out which college to apply to, and currently Christ's and Emmanuel are at the top of my list.

Thank you very much!

Oh, lol, in that case sorry for what must be an overly-complicated answer :p: Can i take this oppurtunity to recommend Christ's anyway? Everyone else is far less into over-explaining than me

No, your response was great. I had been under the impression that it was an entirely random process, and you cleared that up, so thanks.

!!! Is it true that the matriculation offer is being phased out, and that only 10 were offered by Christ's this year? Alas, the prospects of such an offer were really driving my efforts to work this holiday, ridiculous as that may be...

Haven't a clue and I wouldn't count on one anyway. I hoped for one and got 42 IB points with 777 in my highers, the toughest offer available. Even then, making the offer is easy enough, getting it is the hard bit.

As far as i'm aware, yes. It's also only for science/maths candidates. But as TheFriendlySocialist said, you shouldn't count on one anyway - they base it on what they see of you which may not reflect your potential. For example, out of the eight lawyers in my year, one person got a first. He also got the hardest offer. Chances are, if you could get an EE offer, you could easily make the standard so just keep working

That's what everyone on the Internet says, and it does seem like everyone who gets an offer already has one foot in the door. But when I told my Career's adviser what my offer was she more or less advised me to view Cambridge as a far-away dream and expect to go to my second choice XD.

I'd view it as something you can take a shot at, and that's it. One of the reasons I think I got my offer was that I horribly screwed up my first interview and was thus calmer during the next two, as in the intervening period I'd already come to terms with the fact that I wasn't going to be getting in, so I might as well relax and enjoy the other two interviews.

Good luck!

Actually that's similar to the reason I think I got an offer, my results for the Junior cert ( the Irish equivalent of the GCSE's) were so much worse than anyone else I knew applying, so at the interviews I didn't feel too much pressure thinking I already stood no chance.

Hi everyone,

After getting my AS results yesterday I've decided to apply to Christ's College to study medicine. Has anyone heard of the college having certain preferences when it comes to your application i.e.what is their weighting on UMS, interview, BMAT, GCSE grades etc?

Any tips on applying to Christ's/Cambridge generally would also be appreciated

All I can say is make sure you do well in the interview. I know people with exceptional exam grades who have not been accepted, simply because they did not perform well in the interview.

I don't know whether this helps or not, but also try looking at application statistics on the Cambridge website - some colleges get a lot more applications for certain subjects than other colleges, so this could be something to bear in mind when you make your application.

Another thing is the personal statement - from my experience the best thing to do is to focus on the subject, not how you're a member of the sixth form committee or what you've done outside your studies etc (unless its related to the course in question). Yes add 1 or 2 lines at the end how you enjoy sport and/or music, but be careful not to go on. Also its important not to come across as big-headed or arrogant in your personal statement.

Hope this helps
I don't have anything to input, but I'm looking at exactly the same thing so I think this thread may be useful
I don't mean to be rude, but I don't get why people always want the "inside" story before applying. It's not like anyone on here really knows how any college will rate applicants (unless they are actually directors of studies- in which case there would probably be issues with them giving out unofficial information).

The OP wants to study medicine. Personal qualities and activities, hobbies etc are pretty important for Medicine courses.

I'd advise more than 2 lines about extra-curriculars for a Medicine personal statement.
My tip for PSes, no matter the course, would be a 2-to-1 ratio - two parts about the subject and your love/aptitude for it, blah blah blah, and the remaining third on extracurriculars.

Hey, I've applied to Christ's for Medicine deferred till 2012. Anyone else in this position? Anyone who's been through the process and like to calm me down by telling me about the interviews? The site says it can be up to 3 interviews, which can be up to 40 minutes long >.< would that be ALL science??

So, I've got an interview in a week, for Physical Natural Sciences!
Who else has applied, and when are your interviews?
I did not know of the existence of this thread.

I am applying for PPS at Christ's. Any other PPSers?

(By the way, I still don't know if I'm getting an interview. How many of you have been already told?)

Applying for Maths and hopefully a choral scholarship (I've auditioned, just waiting to hear the result), also still waiting to hear about interviews, although apparently the maths ones aren't until the beginning of December so there's still some time...
Don't worry about not hearing yet. I didn't hear about my interview till the end of November because my interview was in mid-December (I'd actually given up by then and got a shock when i got an e-mail ). They usually leave it 2 - 3 weeks beforehand to tell you
