Internet has gone up to £45. I think this may be because the internet limit has gone.

They just changed the termly payment to a once yearly payment

Ha, i knew it was a termly payment last year! No one believed me! Thanks for confirming that

Nope - some of the rooms are for second years and third years (or they better be since i'm living there next year!). A lot of freshers will be in Third court (W and Y, mainly, but also S and T), Staircase 4 (mainly scholar's rooms here though and 3rd year rooms), P and Q (well, a few - these are mainly for second years) and Z/Z Annexe (with the third years). I was in Z in my first year  The only rooms freshers will have no chance of being in are first and second court rooms (A, B, C, D, E, H, L, M, N) and the Jesus Lane/King Street houses (the first are for third years and scholars, the second are for second years)

Wow, this was really useful, thanks! So scholars possibly get rooms in First Court? Wow, if ever I've heard an incentive, that was it! Pos rep for you, Grandma.

Go for Second Court when you get a first, grandson of mine. First court rooms aren't actually that nice whereas one second court room apparently has a mini-bar

Yeah but First Court is so attractive! I could always invite my friends over and just stare at the circular lawn! That being said, the idea of a mini-bar really does appeal to my alcoholic tendencies... :/

Hmm, i'm not sure how many scholar's rooms actually are in First Court but i assume there are some...

How about this? Get a first in first year and try a Second Court Room. Make sure you're near the bottom of the ballot so that in second year, you're near the top and then try a First Court Room  (You could also do this the other way round)

I'm not really sure whether I'd like to live in the first court. Apparently some guy living there used to get loads of tourists coming into his room, (eg. taking a shower, not locking door and coming back to a room full of tourists), and some even refused to believe that he was actually a student and not just someone paid to act one

There aren't very many first court rooms available to 2nd year scholars at all.

How does the ballot system work with scholars? I know this sounds really pretentious, incidentally. It's not me assuming that I'm going to get a first and if it helps support my case, the fact I'm yet uneducated in the ways of scholarly behaviour ought to indicate that I've not really given too much thought to the matter. An appealing thought nonetheless...

After you get a first you get an email listing all the scholars rooms and are asked to give preferences. Once you've sent them your preferences they hand out rooms in the same order as the ordinary ballot. (So for me last year I was right at the bottom and ended up in a room nothing like what I wanted).

(Still this year I am top of the ballot and will have, in my opinion, the nicest first court room next year)

Depends on what you eat/drink, but I'd say that somewhere from 2 pounds up to 5 pounds per meal. The internet is something like 15 pounds, and it is put into your college bill automatically. I mostly use internet from my room. We used to have a limit on how much we could use it daily, but this term there hasn't been one, so I don't know if it is permanently gone or just a temporary situation.

Awesome, thanks  I was snooping around the accommodation handbook, and wasn't quite sure. Is the limit very low? Even though I doubt I'd have tons of time for internet, I do like browsing :P Thank youu

Oh okay, thank youu ... that's not too bad, I thought it would be a horrendous charge

Like Lyam said, I would like to get a first, just to see what it's like living in First and Second court :P But saying that, I really doubt that I will. I think I would be glad just passing next year to be honest.
The I wasn't such a big fan of the architecture in New Court but the accommodation seemed really warm and practical on the inside, so I don't think I'd mind living in the typewriter  I think for my interview I stayed on one of the rooms which face King's Street (but wasn't in the typewriter)

Ha ha, i'd like to get a first fullstop :P The rooms in second court are nicer - they're very big with great facilities. First court's ... er ... well, the rooms are nice but i have heard some horror stories about the noise (the bells are *very* distracting apparently), the facilities (people living on top floors of buildings and having to traipse down several sets of stairs to shower etc) and the actual state of the buildings... Though since i don't live in them, i can only really comment on the anecdotes i've heard.

I'm guessing you were in Staircase 4 then. Those are pretty nice rooms actually  Though some are a bit of a trek to get to (I tried to find someone who lived in 4/37 once. Took me ten minutes, including wandering up 3 separate flights of stairs and from one end of the building to the other, quite lost) (that being said, i'm also directionally challenged which may explain it )

The limit used to be 1GB per day, which is rather good. Regular browsing and that kind of stuff shouldn't be a problem. For me it only ran out if I had long skype conversations and that kind of stuff. And anyway, I don't know if they're going to go on limiting it in the future, or if they have now stopped doing it.

Thank you for all that info  Now I'll think carefully about my choice of room if I ever get a first, which I'm pretty sure I wont, but still - a girl can dream can't she? :P I love old buildings but I don't think I could actually live in old rooms with beams and such.

I saved the map that the Porters gave me the night before my interview - it had my room number written on it. I just went to find it, and it says "Room 4.3" So yes, as you correctly said, I was on staircase 4  The rooms were very warm and I wasn't expecting it to be like that at all! Lots of desk space though (probably for lots of studying) And yes, it's miles away! But the rooms are nice

If it makes you feel any better, your directional skills can't be worse than mine - it took my parents and I combined about 25 minutes to find my room :P I went to the Z staircase initially and couldn't find where 4 was. Ugh it was so frustrating, because it was freezing and it was quite late. When I say it was freezing, I mean it was freezing for my standards - right now I live in the middle east, so the contrast in temperature was huge :P

Oh okay, 1 GB a day is very good  My download limit at home is 20 GB a month and it never runs out, even though we are a family of 3. Saying that, I don't know if this 20GB includes general browsing or not.

Do you guys generally enjoy your time at Christ's? Or is there anything in particular that bugs you about the college?
I can't wait for next year!

Even if you put some thought in, there is no guarantee you'll get anything like the room you ask for in the scholars ballot. I didn't.

Heh, I'm bad enough that when i helped at the last open day, they asked me to take PPS students to staircase K and I had to run out and find it first (and ask my personal tutor for help. That being said, he wasn't sure where it was either). Then they asked me to take a prospective applicant to 2/25 and i took us up one flight of stairs too many and couldn't work out why it wasn't there :colondollar:. The girl was very nice about it though

College rooms are generally warm and toasty.

Yeah, i'm really enjoying Christ's. It has a great location and a nice community feel (I think i'd feel way too anonymous in a place like King's and i'd feel really self conscious in a place like Corpus). Food's occasionally questionable but it makes a great bonding experience  Overall, I love my random, arbitrary choice

Random choice? Oh, snap! I was going to apply to Corpus but it was too small. I then sent my application off to my referee with Trinity Hall on it (for little reason other than knowing a third year there!) I had that quickly brought back and then looked at my philosophy text book and Darwin was staring at me! Christ's it is, then.

That and First Court...

That and you, Grandma.
