I must say my musical abilities (or for that matter, lack thereof) would mean that taking music as an A-level would have been positively tragic  Which instrument did you play for it (just going off what the people at my school did, I think they specialised in one instrument).

From what I know, the pressure on Imperial students is quite immense compared to their support. I think the pressure on us as Cambridge students might be a bit more, but we get a lot of support. Ah, I see Imperial are taking one step closer towards becoming synonymous with Oxbridge. I think it'll benefit the students though, which is never a bad thing

I stayed in London for two nights and just couldn't wait to leave. Interesting how the city polarises opinions.

I have youtubed him with stephen frym I saw the 'what's your name?' sketch. I thought it was brilliant

I'm a pianist  But I also play the flute and sing but Piano is my principle instrument. (Yeah most people do specialise in a snigle instrument although there are some specially talented musicians who specialise in Several. I'm jealous :frown: )

Yes, I think we'd probably have a lot higher workload but we also get a lot more support.

Haha well I totally understand why you didn't like London - very understandable. It's not for everyone. Very crowded, very fast paced, big, noisy, expensive etc.

hahaha yes, the "your name, sir" sketch is good  It was the first one I watched. It got funnier the second and third time I watched it :P It's what I call very British humour

Yeah, the distances in London are pretty big as well. It can take 45 minutes to get to lectures from some accommodation. It's funny that people ask me how I will get around Cambridge (only 20 mins to lectures, less for you and other scientists), when it would actually be more difficult to get around London.

Agreed... everyone is saying "so are how are you getting around Cambridge" and the fact is that as far as I know, everything except for the Cavendish is so close by to Christ's! So I would be able to walk to most places within 20 minutes or something :P

I would have liked to live in London though, because there is so much to do, and so much to eat! Birmingham is excellent for restaurants, particularly Indian, but London is meant to be on another level (e.g. an authentic South Indian restaurant has only recently opened up in Birmingham, but there have been a few in London, including some big chains from India for years). I think that it will be worth living there once I start earning (eventually!), as a higher salary (London bonus) will help to compensate for higher living costs. Although I will have to learn to deal with the congestion.

If you want Indian food, we can do an Indian cook up every couple of weeks or something  It'd be awesome
The two south indian restaurants that i've been to in London were okay but a bit pricey though.

You'll get used to the congestion, and make sure you try to avoid peak times when socialising.

London may possibly be an excellent place to work as a graduate (particularly for an Economics graduate) but not for a student unless you have stashes of money, me thinks.

I would slightly disagree with you on your point about econ being the new medicine- I've found that for the students it is, but the parents will still see medicine as the holy grail .

No! Really?
Well a lot of my desi friends here are doing Economics and all the Indian parents are going "Wowww he's studying Economics at Wharton/Cambridge/Other Institution  His parents must be so proud!"

The reason why economics is linked with IB is because a lot of economics students tend to want to go into IB, having picked econ because they think it is best for the industry, which isn't true. It is more correlation than a causal link between economics graduates and placements in IB. Numerate degrees are preferred, but this can be anything from economics to engineering to chemistry. Even then, it doesn't matter for Sales&Trading, where you will probably see English Lit, History and language grads. What they do care about is the institution you have attended with target unis being LSE, Oxbridge, Imperial and certain courses at UCL and Warwick.
I'm going on holiday btw, so if I don't reply that's why.

ooo okay. One of my friends was telling me how she did an internship over easter for RBS in Investment Banking at some of the students there did unrelated degrees like Engineering and I couldn't quite believe it.
Interesting!

Have a good holiday

Thinking of applying for Christ's, can anyone tell me the chances of getting an en-suite room in my first year? Also how is the night life, I read something about Christs bar closing earlier than others? Thanks!

En-suite: fairly good chance. I'd say roughly half the year will have en-suite (about 50 in the Typewriter, a few in Staircase 4, a few in Z Annexe)

Nightlife: The rumour about the bar is just that: a rumour. The bar keeps pub hours (during term) and actually has quite cheap drinks. As the college is in the centre of town, it makes club access easy - Life is opposite Z staircase, Cindies is about a minute's walk away. Kambar, Fez and Soul Tree (Is it still Soul tree?) are close by. There are 2 coded entrances to Christ's and a 24 hour Porter's Lodge so getting back in is also easy.

It's not still Soul Tree, something like Lola Lo, but who really cares? Cindies isn't Cindies, Life isn't Life.

As a Fresher from this October I can tell you a little bit about how they allocate rooms in the first year.

The rooms are divided by rent band and the higher rent bands have the ensuites.
You don't get much choice as to where in the college you want to stay but you CAN choose a rent band that suits your budget and whether you want ensuite or not.

You have the option of stating whether you want an ensuite room or not in that particular rent band - so if ensuite was important to you, you are almost be guarenteed it in first year

Does Christs still give EE offers or is that a thing of the past? Would be awesome to get an offer like that!

I think it's still possible, but very rare.

Yep, but if you get a first in years 1 and 2, you don't have to interview, you get an automatic place (at Cambridge anyway, I'm not sure if the same applies if I chose to apply elsewhere). I have no idea how I got through the first interview though! So I'm sure how that's supposed to help me

Also, I saw a comment you made to kpatb about lectures only being 20 mins away. Apparently lectures for medics are a 5/10 minute walk, which is nice.

Yeah, Christ's is even more of an ideal location if you are scientist, unless you happen to play an outdoor sport like rugby or football, where you have to go all the way to Girton to play.
You must have got your freshers' pack by now- where is your room? I'm in New Court, so I get an ensuite at a reasonable price- pretty happy about that .

I will look forward to cooking Indian food with you, only that I have to learn to cook first :P! Despite living in the UK, I haven't actually been to eat South Indian food in London, although I know there are great places to eat there. The one time we were going to eat at one we couldn't find it, so ate somewhere else, which was actually a nice find . However, there is now a cheap and good quality South Indian restaurant in Birmingham.
Yeah, I suppose you would get used to the congestion in London, and if you live there you might use the tube and other forms of transport regularly anyway. Besides, I've just been to France, and the traffic there is probably 10 times worse! When you couple a concentrated population with bad drivers, it becomes an absolute nightmare to get around. Also there are a million pedestrian crossings. It is well worth going to see the Louvre though- the largest museum in the world and surely one of the best, and it is free for under 26 EU nationals!

Actually, Girtonians usually have to come into Cambridge if they want to play sports against other colleges. Christ's have pitches not that far from college, and no further away than many other colleges. It's hardly bad in that regard.

I meant Girton village, as I thought we had some grounds there? That is what the map given in my pack seems to indicate.

Not as far as I'm aware.

Ok, you will now better than me as a current student. I'm probably going to be playing badminton anyway, so I won't have to go out that far either way unless I visit Girton college.

Badminton is in Kelsey Kerridge. We usually meet in the Plodge 10 mins beforehand to wander over (if the men's captain isn't going to do this, I'm darn well hijacking the list and suggesting it anyway! I get lonely walking on my own )

Ok thanks for the info, although I currently can't make sense of it . Just to warn you, I'm only a casual player- it's very unlikely I will be playing for any teams.

Men's teams don't bother me - If you were female, I might have a different reaction  Ha ha, no worries. Most players are casual. That being said, for Men's Seconds, I'm pretty sure all you need to do is say you can play a match: it's open policy so if you ever feel like doing it, you can just tell the captain (and if you DO know any girls who want to play badminton, send 'em my way!)

Is this a bad time to say I want to study Law at Christ's, I'm female and play badminton but definitely not competitively? ^^ I'm quite scared

Ooh, are you coming up as a law student? Will see you in subject drinks then  Otherwise, give me a shout if you have questions about law at Christ's.

Ha ha, it's alright. 2 of my team members are currently "Only ask us if you're desperate". I may start bribing female badminton players. Alternatively, some of my male friends have offered to self-identify as female for matches

Did I hear girls' badminton? I love badminton, used to play quite a lot but it's been neglected for the past couple of years
