Oops, my bad. Any Asians going to Christ's? I have heard there are very few...is this true? :/

Original post by arani
I should have been clearer! By Asian, I meant from the subcontinent i.e. living in UK, but Asian descent! Hope that makes sense! This question may seem a little weird! It's just that I heard from a friend that certain colleges have very few Asian (in general) students! Just wanted to make sure that this not true with regards to Christs! Thank you.

So basically, this is really late but... in 1st year (so when you freshers come up, the 2nd years) there are quite a few people of Oriental Asian origin and a few from the Subcontinent... probably more so than most other colleges (but only a handful from the sub continent in our year).

To be honest though, I wouldn't make it a big deal. You'll be in Cambridge, make the most of your time while you're there - meet as many as people as you can, regardless of race. It's such a diverse place to be, race shouldn't be the first thing on your mind :P
You can take comfort in knowing that almost everyone I have met in college has been absolutely lovely and my race has never been an issue in any way.

Oh and if you're so interested in socialising with people form the Subcontinent (I'm guessing you mean the Indian Subcontinent) there is always societies like the Hindu Society and Cambridge University India Society which you can join - they're pretty active and have a lot of events going on

Quality of teaching is fairly uniform IIRC though alex_hk can tell you more about that.

Least competitive colleges are Homerton, Girton, the girl's colleges etc. HOWEVER, I say this on the assumption you want to go to that specific college. If you are talking about more chance of getting into the uni, NO COLLEGE WILL GIVE YOU AN ADVANTAGE. If you're a weak candidate, Girton etc WILL reject you because they'll get better applicants in the pool. Pick somewhere you'd like to live for 3 years: your chance of getting into the uni will be, statistically speaking, the same regardless of where you apply.

Well, if you mean clubs as in nightclubs, Christ's has the best location for them. Other central colleges are Jesus, Sidney Sussex, Trinity, Tit Hall, King's, Pembroke, Corpus, John's, Caius etc.

Otherwise, you'll really have to visit for friendliness. I mean, I personally found Downing to be kind of imposing and also King's but I know people at both colleges who absolutely love it there. It's really a subjective thing.

This one is hard to judge at any college until you actually get there and live there for a couple of weeks.
I'm an international student and just love Christ's.

To be honest, if you're so into international stuff there's loads of international societies that are really active that you can be a part of, so international life within college isnt that important.

Saying that, there's plenty of internationals and British born students of international origin around.

Has anyone got an accommodation offer? Or does anyone know when they'll be given? Cheers.

Last year, we got introductory packs in September after our places had been confirmed, which had our rooms in them.
How often does the average Christ's kid have to dress up in formal attire? Do I need some properly posh dresses?
(Don't judge me for procrastinating from this god damn reading list by planning outfits!)

You need white blouse and black trousers/skirt for matrices, graduation and if you get a first, scholars ceremony. Otherwise anything formal will do for any formal halls you go to there. You will need a black tie dress for May Balls and Society Dinners

Most societies will have 1 formal dinner a year, plus each subject will also have 1. You'll also find that, at least in first year, a lot of people go to formal for occasions like birthdays (not quite a formal dinner- not black tie but still smart).

Matric dinner isn't black tie but still formal (lounge suits normally for guys).

You'll also want something for may week, most people go to at least 1 event then.

But really it depends how much you want to. I know people who seemingly went to formal every week, and some who almost never went at all.
found it

So you're telling me that the Scholars' dinner isn't black tie? Fml.

Oh yeah, that is too. I mentally classed that as a society dinner although exactly what society that would be, I don't know.

(PS. You'll like scholars dinner. You actually get good food for once)
