But if it doesn't take any pressure off (because passing the A level bit of the offer is trivial), what is the point of having EE offers in the first place?I agree entirely. (Though it's not just the interview: there could be GCSE grades, UMS, olympiads, STEP papers already taken...)STEP isn't remotely fair. For example, (almost) everyone will have had A level classes (if of varying quality), but only some people go to schools that offer specialist STEP classes.*

This doesn't necessarily mean that it's a bad way to compare applicants (in fact it's rather effective, at least compared to the alternatives). STEP is probably one of the best ways to assess someone's ability to get round to doing some work, which is going to be quite important for degree performance.

*Admittedly I have no evidence whatsoever that specialist classes help.

I think the purpose of the EE was so you didnt even have to work for the alevels enabling you to spend more time on furthering your knowledge of your own subject and academic interests:you werent restricted by something that was ridiculously easy for you anyway. Because although alevels are easy (for cambridge people i would imagine) you still have to set aside some time to learn the material and do pastpapers, easy or not i doubt anyone would get complacent With regards to alevels, i doubt the teaching can have that much effect except for maybe coursework. I learned all the material from the textbooks myself, havung good teachers wont help imo. Though i agree from a poor school where the environment is rough that can be detrimental.

I dont know the quality of step classes at every school. But i asked for help with step at my school and so the head of maths asked a teacher to did a session with 5 of us one day afterschool. The session consisted of him giving us oxford MAT pastpaper questions every 5 mins he would ask a question and we would sit in silence and do it. He didnt even go through it, just told us the answers. None of us turned up the next week because it was pointless and so they didnt do anymore. From my experience there was never any real way of getting help with step other than working from pastpapers and checking against tsr solutions to see if youre right. And thats from a grammar school, though perhaps private schools can give better, specialised help as cambridge seem to think, but frankly i dont see how a teacher can help you in a way that you wouldnt be able to help yourself. I dont think im disadvantaged against people who did have proper step help -whatever that means. After all the easter prep school is probably the best help you can get from someone other than yourself.

I am sure step isnt perfect, but to say it isnt remotely fair i disagree with completely. Like i said, i dont think anyone can find a substitute to just doing pastpapers for step - which makes it a very good way of judging mathematical ability and the commitment and enthusiasm needed to cope with a tough university maths course

Working during lessons should be plenty. But if you're allowed to spend the lessons working on something else then I suppose the justification makes sense.

Schools definitely vary in how much they help, though it isn't necessarily a state/private split.

TSR + private study is likely to be just as good as lessons, but even assuming that everyone knows about TSR, that doesn't mean that lessons aren't helpful. If people do the lessons on top of the private study that they would have done anyway then they're getting more practice overall. Presumably there's some substitution effect where providing lessons reduces independent study, but I doubt that many people reduce private study enough to cancel out the extra hours.

And as I said I think it's an effective way of assessing candidates, but effective isn't the same as fair.

For maths is the offer only EE or is it EE 1,1. If it is the former, pretty unfair not to ask for STEP when practically everyone has to do it.

no just E,E. They will advise you to sit STEP though.

Skeen, you got S,2 right?

Lol i didnt actually stalk you particularly. I read through all the step threads since 2008 back in summer lol. What did you get then?

I just stalked more carefully and according to Extricated you missed your trinity AA+1,1 offer and were summerpooled to Christ's after having achieved S,2. Then the last post on the thread is by you where you say ''extricated is right.....I got into Christ''

So, I was right about what you got... You cant have actually forgotten your step grades lol

 you quoted me on a non-STEP thread on a post that was like 2 years+ http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1391191&page=8&p=48662779#post48662779

Extricated was right that I was pooled, but he was wrong about my STEP grades. I have actually submitted my grade and marks for the STEP papers I sat somewhere on TSR so maybe you just need to stalk a bit more carefully.

Also, quote me if there is something you actually need to know like the EE offer thing, otherwise like I told you before- if I see you in person you will see if my talk on TSR is real or fake. As you seem to be a fan of quoting Extricated, you should ask him about what stuff I've done at Cambridge.

Not really a fan, just quoting as you advised me to stalk further. Why dont you just tell me your step grades so you can save us all the trouble of looking further. I have seen in the STEP results (no discussion) thread you state you got S,1....but your trinity offer was 1,1 so if you didnt miss the offer with S,2 it has to be lower than that....S,3 i presume (you must have been lucky to get in with that but i see you got 110 in II so well deserved i imagine)?

If i am ever afforded the pleasure of seeing you in cambridge, id be glad to take you down to the bar :colone:

You quoted me in that thread ages ago, only like a couple of days ago did I say stalk me. My offer from Trinity was quoted from Extricated and I plainly agreed- like before when he said my STEP grades were.... STEP is just a thing of the past- I looked at it this year as my boi Khallil was sitting it and he destroyed it, heard you helped him out with some resources still, but after you quoted me and mentioned my Dad, dw when I see you it will be settled- if you came to Christ's LOL your walking to your funeral :colone: Might need to speak to the Senior Tutor aka my DOS about digging a grave in first court- I'm sure the Master won't mind, his blessed.

When did i mention your dad o.O Im actually confused now, what were you step grades?

I heard it from a maths student at cambridge, he had access to all results for this year just gone by. You got a third last year and failed this year and hence got kicked out. Did you find the course very hard/boring, or were there extenuating circumstances?

This student must have access to the wrong data, I didn't fail no exams. Who is this Maths Student? I will be studying Maths at Cambridge next year LOL. Personally the course isn't boring, nor is it very hard- it just boils down to how much work you put in, although it is definitely harder than the stuff at Warwick. Who are you btw-studying your third year of Mathematics at Warwick? I needa slap up the whole connections of fagets spreading false stuff about me.

Well I have connections with a few of your friends, and they all said that you got kicked out due to failing. Why are you denying the truth? Just be a gentlemen and admit that you got kicked out. It's nothing to be ashamed of, maths at cambridge is very hard in the first place

lol few of my friends?! Now I can tell this is some troll. If you knew any of my mates they would tell you what your doing ain't smart. Have fun looking at my name in the Class lists next year lol. I got enough guys doing Maths at Warwick in your year, you won't be hard to hunt down hopefully. That is the end of this matter, unless your not shook to give your name.

I know someone starting at Christ's maths this October, so I am sure this ''confusion'' can be sorted out then
Didn't know we had our own little thread.

I am an applicant!

Is first year accommodation really as bad as people say? and chances of ensuite?
Has anyone here got any interview offers so far this year?
