Oxford: MEng value?

Hi there,

What is the value of an MEng degree in job seeking? Is it to be considered of higher quality in the job market than, say, a BEng from MIT?

Also, does MEng obtained at Oxford have any effect upon the application and time-length for an PhD course in Engineeringat Oxford? Because a lot of int'l PG applicants have only Bachelor prior their PhD course, so I suppose the PhD course must contain some Master-degree elements. Therefore, is that true if saying the MEng degree could shorten PhD course by, say, one year?

Thanks

In the UK, an MEng is the standard educational qualification required to become a Chartered Engineer. A candidate with an American qualification would have to be reviewed on an individual basis to see whether the degree contents corresponds to the same depth and standard.

UK students applying for Engineering PhDs will almost certainly be required to have an MEng or Bachelors + Masters qualification. Generally speaking many international students will also be required to register as a Masters student first if they only have 3 years of university education before being allowed to embark on a PhD (although there will also be exceptions to these norms).

It is rare in Engineering to complete a PhD in less than 3 years. It can and does happen occasionally but when you start your PhD your proposal will be expected to contain sufficient work to last 3 years.
