My friend at CC is a member of one of the girly drinking societies. I'll ask her for anecdotes tonight.

The christchurch cardinals are a rather feisty organisation. They get their own bow ties with a 'C' on each half. *cough*rahs*cough*.

And technically, I believe they're known as some obscure debating society :P Just for the pretense of actually doing something other than drinking with their time, I suspect.
"Drinking societies"?! How f*cking bent can you be? If I was out in Cambridge and saw a "drinking society", I'd suplex the lot of them and retain my WWE Hardcore Championship.

Actually, a good number of people are in drinking societies in Oxbridge. Wait till Priya gets back from Italy, she'll tell you how much fun she has with her girls!

Drinking societies look really .. really stupid, from the onlook.
Reply 7
They're not my kind of fun - I declined the offer to join last year. However, Priya loves them. And they're the easiest way of getting invites to other college formals.

Peers,

What do you know about Drinking Societies at Oxford? I am aware that they are a big part of the social scene at Cambridge.

Does Christ Church have a drinking society? Any anecdotes from theirs or others?

Are drinking societies open to graduate students at Oxford?

I disagree, I don't think drinking societies are a 'big' part of Cambridge social life, I've only been out with a first year girls society (which is more of a formalling society than a drinking one, although not really any difference between the two that I can see) once and the majority of people I know seem to be able to have a great social life in Cambridge without being in, or caring about drinking societies. By saying they are a big thing, is like saying that everyone is part of the Cambridge Union (different from CUSU the students union) and gives Cambridge that stuck up, elitist image. Drinking societies are more part of the background, if you like them then great, if you don't it certainly wont make a difference to how much fun you can have and/or how much alcohol you want to drink!

It's no great secret that she's in the SLAGS.

I'm not in a drinking society, but my boat effectively acts as one for the purposes of formal swaps. Some of them are a bit nobbish, but fortunately we don't go out with them
I've never encountered a drinking society in my time at Oxford.. only two eating societies!

They are genuine eating societies.. promise! :p:

agreed. the ones at my college really are. they're not official, you get invited completely at random in fresher's week. The formal swaps sound like fun, but I wouldn't know because I wasn't in the right place at the right time (or on the right email list) during fresher's week. thats about it.

not at all colleges. if they're anything like the ones i know about,( which to be fair aren't that many) they won't (or shouldn't) go totally on who was out clubbing in freshers week- the girl who organises formals for the SLAGS (which im not actually part of, i just go on formals with them as one of the token freshers) has asked me and other girls she knows in my year for lists of people we think would be fun to take out to formal sometime. the girls who were asked aren't exactly cliquey ourselves (im not for sure) and i think that its a good way of doing it

proper reponse to this thread to follow later

Pri, I knew you'd have something to say on the matter!

Grazie for the postcard, btw. Made me smile!
I'm just thinking of the alleged 'secret' societies where it seems you have to flash a lot of money to get an invite from lord rah rah - very old school tie.

I'm sure they do exist...
