Just a note all halls at brookes actually cover university holidays, ive had my room in halls all the time over the christmas break (all 5 weeks of it) same will go for the easter break, as the standard contract is 39 weeks. Cheney is 50 weeks so you have the room over the summer aswell which in most cases isnt actually needed.

You will get a booklet and information on how to apply for halls at about april time there is no rush to do it as long as its done before the deadline they set, as no application is actually looked at intill september.

orly? I didn't know that, that's awesome then!
So you rank the halls in order of where you'd like to be?

When I did it you ranked by 'category' which is a bit ***** tbh. So like ensuite, non-ensuite, catered, self catered etc. You'll get told all about it when you get your accomm pack. They might have changed the system though.

so you can't put a 'first choice' ? that does kinda suck. which halls do/did you live in?
and what's it like living with a shared bathroom? I know people usually prefer ensuite but a lot live with a shared bathroom so it cant be that bad I'm assuming

Unless they've changed the system, no :frown: it sucks.
I lived in Harcourt Hill, because I live about 2 hours away from the uni so got shunted with my last choice really. If you're from Leeds you should have no problem at all getting a decent hall!
Shared bathrooms are nowhere near as bad as people say. I was lucky i guess in that my block alot of people moved out, so i ended up sharing my shower with only about 2 or 3 people. You just get used to it really! Unless you live with someone really disgusting, but i've not known anyone to have problems.

Aww that does suck.
You think me being from leeds will be an advantage? I hope it will be! Did you live close to oxford before you went to the uni?
Yeah I gathered it's not as bad as people make out! What was your first choice?

Yes they allocate them geographically. So the further away you are the closer up your list you get! Close-ish, about 90 miles, i'd never been there before or anything. Most people in my halls were more in the under an hours drive away distance.
My first choice was any of the halls near my lectures!! Clive Booth, Crescent, Warneford, i would've been happy with any of those, but there we go!
Living 15 minute walk from the university now is sooo much better than a 45 minute bus ride

i complain about my 20 minute bus journey some mornings from crescent and how the U5 never turns up on time

The one halls you can put is Cheney you can put that one as a stand alone choice. As said the others are in groups so they have self catered ensuite, self catered non ensuite. then the catered halls. Of which Cotuit is closing end of this year so that one wont be available.

I have a shared bathroom well 2 really, i have no problem with it at all, i didnt want ensuite when i applied either, i dont see the problem with not having one. They get cleaned twice a week and i never have to queue.

ah I see, and that's no problem, I dont fancy catered halls.

Would you guys say oxford is an expensive place to live? In comparison to the north, I mean.

I stayed there for 2 weeks last summer with some mates. It was far cheaper than either London or Dublin anyway. Most stuff cost the same as when I was in Glasgow. Can't really compare it to North England as I've never been but I didn't find it too bad anyway.

Thats annoying, I live 1 hour away, so i'll probably get my last choice :frown:

Could anyone reccommend me a hall?
I would prefer en-suite (but i wouldnt mind having non-ensuite), living close to the main campus, down-to-earth friendly people, self-catered.
I'm not sure about getting catered, as someone said its not as sociable :s-smilie:

Also, how far away is the campus from Oxford town? How long will it take to walk, and how much would the bus be?

Sorry for all the questions

Someone in my town got into crescent, so i might just have been unlucky, but you wouldn't get your first choice unless you have an unconditional.

If you want ensuite you only have 3 choices - Cheney, Clive booth ensuite, or Paul Kent. Out of those Cheney and Clive Booth are nearest the uni, Paul Kent is on the U5 bus route.
Otherwise the ones near the campus that are non-ensuite are Warneford, Clive Booth non-ensuite, and Cotuit but i've heard this is being knocked down, plus it's catered.
I've heard excellent things about Warneford from people who lived there.

The uni is about a 20 minute walk from town i'd say if you're not ambling. It's really easy to walk, getting the bus is only worth it if you have lots of bags. I can't remember how much it is, something around £2 probably, but if you get into halls in first year you get a free Brookes Key, which lets you on the Brookes buses for free and other Oxford Bus Co buses for a £1 i believe.
Hey guys! Can anyone tell me more about Paul Kent? Coz I was thinking to apply for the en-suite there...
How long does it take to get to the main campus? Is it really that bad with the buses or can u just walk?
And what was this comment abot "dodgy area":s-smilie:?
Plus how is the atmosphere there?

Puh, sry for all the questions:smile:

I live 65 miles away and got my first choice.
My friends live down the road and got their 6th/7th choices.
It's not all black and white.

Catered is probably THE MOST social option, so that person obviously knows nothing.
I live in Cheney and it takes me about 20 mins to walk to Sainsburys in the very centre of town. When you live in halls you get a free bus pass for the year, giving you free travel on the U1 and U5, and then £1 travel on the night buses.

Sorry I know this is a bit off topic, but I was wondering do Oxford University students and Brookes students ever mingle/hang out together on nights out? Have you made any friends at Oxford uni that you meet up with?

It does happen - clubs and so on tend to have separate nights, ie 'brookes' nights and 'oxford' nights, but there's nothing to stop you going out on an oxford night. I have friends who have friends from Oxford uni, but i think they knew them beforehand. I actually work at Balliol college and it's quite funny when you bump into the people you serve dinner on a night out! :p:
just my input!
I've got an unconditional offer - which I assume, from reading previous posts in this thread, means I'm most likely to get first choice when it comes to halls. Problem is, I'm not sure whether to go for Cheney or Clive Booth. The contract length for the former is a bit scary; but then again I'd rather not have to spend too much time at home?

Worried about the rah-rahs though. I don't mix with such people, even though people have always called me 'posh'! (Which is a lie, I just know how to write and speak properly haha)

Also, will student loans make sure that they completely cover your accomodation costs? I've never applied for halls using loans before, and the one time I applied for a loan, I didn't know where I would be staying, so I ended up getting an amount that would barely allow me to afford living anywhere! ):

Personally I would go for Clive Booth. You get all your holidays at halls still, it's only summer that you won't have in halls....and tbh, loads of house contracts tend to start around July/August time anyway. and you spend less on accomm. My opinion though. And you'll avoid most of the rahs.

as to student finance, no, they don't guarantee that they'll cover your rent. Mine in first year just about covered it, this year it doesn't by 2 months rent. You get either the minimum basic loan, or however much they feel youre entitled to based on your household income...so it's luck if what you get is the same as your halls! especially in oxford :s-smilie:

I'm going to try and get into Clive Booth non ensuit... Is the difference between ensuit and non ensuit just that one has a shared toilet/shower and the other doesnt?

Which would you guys recomend? I'm a guy, so I don't really need two hour long showers and mass privacy
