Endcliffe/city & central/tapton hall?

i got my home from home guide 2009 through the post today! i.e. claire = very excited

it would be really useful if some current sheffieldians could give me advice about the best accomodation:

ideally, i would like a mixed sex, self-catering flat...i would be willing to share a bathroom (but obvs ensuite would be lovely!) and would want internet connection

what do you recommend? where do people seem to have the best time (i'm quite outgoing)?

Pls quote on reply!

thank you all!!!

Pick Endcliffe if you can afford it.
Then city centre as second choice.

There have been quite a few other threads on accommodation, with the general consensus being 'ENDCLIFFE IZ AMAZINNN'.
Incidentally, everywhere has internet. And flat's won't necessarily be mixed, but floors/blocks will be.

great, thanks!

any other thoughts?

apparently sheffield is mostly single sex and most of my friends who go there already are in single sex... the uni is trying to make it less so though

I got the book yesterday and spent quite a while being a little too excitable about it all!
However, I was wondering if anyone has any idea what sort of percentage of the self catering rooms at Endcliffe are en-suite? Just as a rough idea.

I have no experience of living in Endcliffe, but if you want to know a bit more about City accommodation, feel free to drop me a message

I got put in Endcliffe self catering in a single sex flat (even though I said I wanted mixed). The distance from the uni can be annoying if you're in a lazy mood but there's buses and a couple of different stops dotted each side of the village. General impression I got from speaking to people in my classes was that everyone in Endcliffe had as much fun as they wanted and it was much more social whereas those staying in City were a little more varied in opinion - some liked it and some loathed it. Tapton is a bit rubbish although anyone I knew who lived there enjoyed it as the sense of community is supposed to be really good. Not sure if it's worth the money though as it's not much cheaper than Endcliffe.

the campus is about 5/10 mins walk from the city centre and the city/central accomodation. whereas endcliffe is about 20-30 mins in the opposite direction. It is near local shops, a supermarket, cafe etc at Broomhill though

You can always trust a geographer to come up with a handy map: http://www.shef.ac.uk/visitors/mapsandtravel/central_big.html

I would say it is about a 10-15 min walk from the main uni buildings. I don't know exactly because I've only done the journey on a coach though!

It's near the main bit of Broomhill. If you go one way it'll take you probably 35-40mins unless you're superfit. The other way maybe more like 25-30mins. Also depends upon which bit of the campus you're trying to get to - it takes forever to get to St George's so I always just got the bus.

Going out on a night you'll either walk (if you're going to the union) or get a taxi. They're pretty cheap when split between 4-5 people.
Gee how slow must some people walk. AFter 2 years walking from Endcliffe it's def 20 minutes to Mappin St (the furthest you'd need to go), defs not 35-40 mins (unless you're a snail). I would agree that night outs are best sorted by taxi though, 20 mins in the cold is not nice really.

I think over 3/4 are en-suite now. There are a good few thousand ones in Endliffe and they are building more in ranmoor.

As someone has already said, the majority of flats are en-suite but they are upping the number of mixed flats next year as they know its proving more popular.

If anyone has any q's I'm in Howden at the moment thats the en-suite self catered and I'd really recommend it, its definately said to be more sociable than city and central.

Some of you may have even been lucky enough to have a tour by me on an Open Day
I'm doing accom tours for campus services at the mo, so can answer most questions.

ooh, exciting map, thanks!!

hmmm, people to seem to find endcliffe more sociable. i'm just so lazy!! anyone know how much taxis are, eg from endcliffe into the city? i live in london and they're just too expensive to even consider
I've only stayed at Endcliffe for one night (open day) but I'd agree its pretty good. I think it took me around 15-20 minutes to walk to the university from there, but I wasn't particulary rushing and was using a map so it could be done quicker.

My friend who is staying in Endcliffe this year said that he would have rather stayed in Tapton because its smaller size = more of a community feel. And it's a bit cheaper I think, as well (although don't quote me on that). Thus I'll probably apply to Tapton.

Also got the booklet through the post today - would've preferred more info on the actual accommodation, instead of just pretty pictures and the story in 10 seconds of students. Hardly anything is said about the rooms, kitchens etc e.g. size, what appliances are included, not even how much it costs! (Unless I've missed something out but I've been through it twice and I can't find anything). Either way, it's only my insurance so It'll be.. after results day is it when insurance people apply for accommodation?
A typical price in the en suite would be £4000 or around that figure. Included in the kitchen is a microwave, 2 fridge freezers, an oven, kettle, iron, ironing board and in mine last year just a small table, then some really uncomfy sofas. Oh the kitchens have tiny tvs in too.
