Endcliffe/city & central/tapton hall?

I'm glad I'm not planning to live in uni accommodation these days...(I sound ancient, lol)...think my accommodation was about £80 a week in first year and that seemed really expensive! I've got a friend in first year at Exeter and he says he's in this really rundown hall thats far away from lectures...I hope he isnt paying insane prices for that, seems a bit unfair...

Hmm, the really run-down hall at Exeter is probably "Lafrowda". It costs something like £65 a week, looks like a prison, and you have to share your shower with like 12 other people :awesome:

nice...
although you do tend to find the rundown places have the best community spirit. I had friends living in the old Ranmoor halls here and there was a really nice feeling in the place despite it being a bit shabby around the edges. Ranmoor was also rumoured to be based on the designs for a Swedish womens prison, lol

so if you had the option again, where would you chose to go? endcliffe still? it just seems so far away from anywhere!

It really isnt. Its only a 15 minute walk to the Uni and the majority of first year students do live there so there is a amazing community feel and lots going on.

I would choose Endcliffe Self-Catered every time, and I do recommend it although I can see why it may not suit everyone.

I know people living in Brocco and Victoria who do really regret their choice when they come to Endcliffe and see whats on offer!

I'm just SO SO glad I'm not in Tapton. Price wise its a complete rip-off for what it is.

I always thought i had my heart set on victoria halls, just cos i dont fancy the walk, but endcliffe does have such a good feel about it. And you meet so many people. Does anyone bike into uni?

Also - how do i go about getting an accomodation tour? Im staying at endcliffe when i come up this week and ive seen it before so thats fine. but i do want to have a look around opal and victoria.
Do i email someone at sheffield beforehand?

i got my home from home booklet through today. The money info was fantastic as well. exciting stuff!

thanks in advance
a fair few people cycle into uni - when I lived at crewe we had our own bike sheds which always had a good amount of bikes stored there and I used to see lots of people whizzing past me on their bikes when I was trudging to uni. There's also lots of places to put your bike at uni (which im sure youve seen if youve been round), lots of bike spaces under the concourse. I have a friend who lives in private accomm near endcliffe atm and she cycles everywhere.

Deffo, plus, in general at least, it's where you are going to find the more down-to-earth, chilled out people.

Well Victoria is nice, I know someone who likes it there but there are alot of international students and the flat cluster size is 4 so you don't get a chance to live with and meet as many people in some respects.

I'm not sure how you get a tour of Victoria I only do the endcliffe ones, have you checked out the accomodation website? Its probably worth contacting the generic email address and finding out.

How come the opal hall website says its fully booked for 2009-10 already? I know they're not owned by the uni but the application system isn't even open yet for new undergraduates :s-smilie:

whaaat?? That cannot be right, surely? There like nearly 1000 rooms arent there?

Oh well, that ones out then... pft.

edit: also - what is opal 3?? never heard of that one before, im guessing its another one not owned by the uni.
I've just realised something that hadn't hit me beforehand, my boyfriend is at music college in greenwich in london. I KNEW i recognised the whole "opal" name, but wasnt sure where from, and now ive just realised! He lives in an opal housing village in greenwich. Its pretty awful if im honest. There's even a facebook group dedicated to telling people how rubbish it is haha. Now i know the rooms in sheffield arent bad cos people have told me so, but its made me a bit more concerned about them. My boyfriends mates doors break all the time, and dont lock properly and their fridge stopped working and no-one did anything about for 2 weeks (!!) mental. I cant believe i didnt realise that before. Ive been getting so annoyed at the lack of information on the sheffield website and the city centre accom. there is hardly anything, (same with the home from home guide) but i understand why now. It will probably increase the chance of me deciding on endcliffe.

eek, sorry about all that. Has anyone had any bad experiences with opal?
crazy, at least im not trying to figure out why i recognise it!! phew
oh my goodness, im sorry to post again, but are ALL self-catered flats in endcliffe this price? (
En-suite room rent: £4,360.02 (£103.81 per week)

from this bit in the website... is everyone paying this??

It's shocking isn't it? But to be fair the new endcliffe rooms are of high quality, so I am not surprised at that price tbh.

It looks as though they are :s-smilie:
I didn't apply to kings college cos of the high price of accommodation in lonodn but looking at this now there really isn't that much difference between prices! sheffield definitely isn't the best uni for giving information I must say, i'm still getting info from manchester and I declined the offer in november
oh flipping heck, im gonna have to do some re-budgeting...

Anyhow, another question. In the main flats in endcliffe, is there any variety of how many people share place? My friend is one of ten people. Are they all like that? I know cratcliffe isnt, but in the main sort of area are they all the same?

They are all varients on the same thing.

The sizes are between 5-13 people. Ones with 5 people have a smaller living area, and a breakfast bar rather than a table.

The larger flats have a table, and flats with 7 or more people have more fridge space and two cookers and microwaves. All of the flats differ in space, shape etc.
eg. Burbage have square living areas, Howdens ones are long and thin.

All the bedrooms are roughly the same size.

I agree, £103 is steep. It was £96 this year, and it was supposed to be going up to £97 but they must have changed their minds last minute.

The finish and stuff is good though, and the rent prices for second and third year (if you decide to go into the private sector) are cheap

I gave Opal a call about this earlier on and they said the reason why it's displayed as "Fully Booked for 2009-10" is because they've not recieved this year's quota yet for rooms to let. Also it's only for Opal 2.
Opal 1 is still good to go and the new Opal 3 which is being finished for September 09.
Opal 3 is gonna be pimp:cool: The is no gym at Opal 3 which is a negative for some but Opal 2 is only a 5 minute walk up the hill and still able to use that.
Opal 3 for me:biggrin:

Molly, do you know if we can specify if we want a large flat (i.e. 8+ people) or a small one (i.e. 7 or less people for example)?

The idea of being with 5 people doesn't really appeal to me, but being in a flat with loads of people does :excited:

Also, is there a shop for general provisions (bread, drink etc.) on the Endcliffe Village site? I only went to the dining hall/bar when I visited :holmes:
