I gave Opal a call about this earlier on and they said the reason why it's displayed as "Fully Booked for 2009-10" is because they've not recieved this year's quota yet for rooms to let. Also it's only for Opal 2.
Opal 1 is still good to go and the new Opal 3 which is being finished for September 09.
Opal 3 is gonna be pimp:cool: The is no gym at Opal 3 which is a negative for some but Opal 2 is only a 5 minute walk up the hill and still able to use that.
Opal 3 for me:biggrin:

thanks for that

Molly, do you know if we can specify if we want a large flat (i.e. 8+ people) or a small one (i.e. 7 or less people for example)?

The idea of being with 5 people doesn't really appeal to me, but being in a flat with loads of people does :excited:

Also, is there a shop for general provisions (bread, drink etc.) on the Endcliffe Village site? I only went to the dining hall/bar when I visited :holmes:

Nope, sadly there is no shop which can be a right pain. You can get some things at the Edge cafe though, such as milk, fruit they'll even let you buy beans if you take a container over to take them back in!

You can't specify flat size sadly, its luck of the draw. There are 2 or 3 blocks of flats that are 5 or 6 side, but the majority of the larger blocks like Frogatt, Howden, Derwent are 8 or more. So in that respect its probably more likely you'd end up in a larger one anyway.

Well that's all a bit disappointing

I suppose I'll just have to hope...

Yes, I know its completely not ideal but they do tend to match personalities quite well on the questionairre and I must say most people at Sheffield are great fun so I'm sure it'll be okay who ever you live with.

People really dont tend to swap around in accomodation, and I think that really proves that the allocations are working to some extent as the majority are very very happy.

I'll just have to make it seem like I'm some major extrovert who can't stand being with small groups of people on the questionnaire. :ninja:
Molly, when do you reckon the online application will be available?

I think they have a box where you can type stuff in at the end I seem to remember. Even if its inappropriate you could always try and squeeze it in there!

I have no idea! But I reckon it must be soonish as last year it was around Home from Home pack time.

Have you heard a little about what the form is like?

I lived in Crewe flats, although this was two years ago so stuff will have changed. I don't know anything like how far it is from the Edge buildings or anything, as they didnt exist when I lived there! However will spill what I do know...

Its a converted mansion so pretty and old on the outside, but was refurbished inside 3 years ago (just before I moved in) so is modern inside. Its got nice grounds and its own tennis courts, and a small police station at the bottom of the drive for some reason...

The flats are of varying sizes, there were 6 in my flat which was about average, there was a bathroom with shower, loo and sink and also a separate toilet and sink between 6 of us. There was a big kitchen with ample cupboard space and a big kitchen table. As its converted, the rooms are of quite varying sizes, so you could be unlucky and get a smallish room (still ok though) or be lucky and get one which could fit a couple of double beds in and still leave space! Oh theres a sink in each room too so dont need to wait for the bathroom to brush your teeth (not that I ever had to wait anyway, I think I had to wait a few minutes for a free bathroom about twice in a whole year).

Its a quieter accommodation as its fairly small, you get a fair few 'semester abroad' students staying there, there were always a few Americans and Australians around. Theres a common room with pool table and table football as well.

oh and theres a photo of my room at crewe and our kitchen on the second page of this old thread if you're interested:

Ahh no honestly not at all, I'm sure alot of people would be better but there arnt that many regulars on the Sheffield TSR bit really.

Well the way it works is you get to choose three preferences of site and accomodation type and list them in order.

Such as:
Villages Catered
Villages Self Catered
Tapton Catered

Then, they try and allocate what you want the most from this.
They also ask whats more important to you, cost, site, or room type.

They will then ask you questions about your personality, if you play music, if you socialise alot etc. They do this to match personalities and stuff.
I'm really torn.
City vs Endcliffe. I really like the convenience of City [plus the fact that it's cheaper], but people seem to be more positive about Encliffe

I'm exactly the same, but i think im gonna stick with endcliffe simply cos theres so many students here and everyone is in the same boat, so its good. Friends who are here reccommend it so much. everyone is so close by.

City isnt cheaper if you are self-catered, it works out the same price really.

I'd say go for where you think you will enjoy yourself most. Wherever you are you will still have a fab time and the social life is about the same anyway.

Crewe is where I live and work too. It is definately a quiter area with the garden and tennis courts looking pretty too. As you've said it's quite old and you can tell at times.

The main complaint I have and get from students is the cold. It's a single glazed building and has quite a lot of problems with the heating and hot water, making it real cold at times. One of the internationals who's just moved in from a country far colder said to me "I'm used to the cold but in my country we have central heating that actually works". It can be a real frustration as in December we went two days with no heating, very cold.

I also had a major damp issue in my room thanks to leaky guttering but they fixed that about 2 weeks after I moved in.

The big positive is the size of the rooms. They're all different and varying, some bigger than others, some are a strange size. Most have a sink but a few of them don't and my neighbour doesn't have working internet either. The doors are code doors so they're more reliable than the newer buildings where most of the outside doors have issues.

The common room is locked most of the time now and has to be hired out. This is a waste but it seems that the ACS would rather hire it to external groups or societies etc. It means the residents of Crewe can't use it for socialising which is pretty poor I think.

It's different and a decent place to live, but certainly not worth 80 odd quid a week. Some of the rooms can be tucked away as some flats aren't in long corridors. For example my room is cut off from the rest of the flat as it's split in 2 halfs. Very strange how some of the flats are laid out.
Haha endcliffe isn't 'amazing'.. It's just a bunch of generic blocks of flats that you get charged a ridiculous amount of money for the priviledge of living in  I have been comfortable living at Endcliffe though, the flats are new and clean with a good en suite bathroom. I'm glad I chose it over the city flats.

I'm in a mixed flat of eight but to be fair living in a mixed flat is no better or worse than living in a single sex one; in fact from what I've seen, it causes more problems. There are lots of people around on the Endcliffe site and it's easy to make friends with people in the flats around you. The rooms are all of a fair size, the desk and shelving are perfect for me although I have had to bring up extra storage drawers and boxes. The kitchen and living area is of ample size, if a little clinical, and there is a cleaner who comes in to tidy every fortnight.

The area in which Endcliffe is situated in is one of the safest and most pleasant areas in Sheffield and I have never felt unsafe walking home in the dark on my own. The view across Hunters Bar and Endclfiffe Park from my window (top floor) is gorgeous, it makes my day.

The walk into uni started out as taking 25+ minutes from where I live for some reason but I guess the walking has made me fitter and we usually make it in 15 now. You will do a lot of walking so if that's not your thing and you also want to save on taxis then opt for the city.

It must've been up a few days at least... the email I got with the link came through on the 3rd but I only saw it today.

It annoys me though how even though I selected private sector as first choice, I still had to go through all the room type bumf! It's not like there's a chance private sector will be full and I'll be allocated second choice, is there?
