Yep, they do count. The footnotes count too, by the way! But not the bibliography, you'll be relieved to hear...

Only if they are 30 words or fewer.

the max limit is 3,500 words actually
Not for OCR it isn't. The word limit is 2500 to 3000, anything over or under that is penalised. Quotes do count but footnotes do not. I'm looking at the guidelines now;

"Candidates undertake an historical investigation of their own producing an extended essay of around 2,500 words, excluding footnotes and bibliography, and (if used) any statistical tables, diagrams and graphs."

Well i'm really in the process of editing mine and reducing it from 3,500 words. I've managed to get it down to 3,050 including the quotes.

I have a feeling it will go back up as i have to add one or two small things.

Thanks for the help guys.

Oh right. To be honest, I was just saying what the rules are at university (and for my A-level History coursework, which I think was Edexel) - I presumed they'd be the same as for you...
If your over the word limit, just stick the quotes in the appendix

I was in a similar position. Got it down to bang on 3000 and then felt the need to add something. More furious rewritting tonight... the deadline is tomorrow. Heh.

The lovely people at AQA.

I agree with you White_redrose, word limits suck big time. Think how much more I could have waffled about the impact of edward's education on his attitude to government or how his parents dying gave him abandonment issues and led to him becoming anally retentive or some such rubbish if only I'd had a few extra words!!

So...what are your coursework essays on fellow historians?

Mine is "‘Individuals do not “shape” historical events, the best they can do is respond to opportunities.’ With reference to one or more individuals you have studied, how far do you support this claim?"

My selected individual is Gandhi.

I have cut mine down from 3,400 to 3,030. Still a long way to go yet though!

"To what extent did Stalin come to power in 1928 because of the weakness of his opponents"

2,900ish words.
"To what extent was Mary, Queen of Scots responsible for her own fate?"

I'm resiting one of my AS papers in the summer, and I've worked out that if I get 73/90 three times and 97/120 on my Russia paper then I'm about 3 marks into an A. I think...hope?... I can do it.

lol spent all weekend doin that on mine (AQA), quotes counted in mine, but sometimes u can just footnote it, or stick it in an appendix if its a massive quote and just quote a bit of it. I took mine to the limit in terms of grammar, so by cutting connective words out and having ridiculously long sentences and footnotes!

i did "How justfied is the view that the Major Generals 1655-7 constituted both a military dictatorship and time of tyranny?"

AQA says 3000 words, but anything 2500-3500 was acceptable.
That's why the people at AQA are nice: you can have upto 3,500 whole wordlings. Hurrah. My title was "To what extent was Edward VI influential during his reign?" Though I actually have a nasty feeling my tutor tweaked it slightly and I've completely forgotten the rewording....

Mine is AQA thats y i sed 3500 words max i just assumed it was the same for all exam boards to make it fair. My question was " To what extent were the actions of the British responsible for the partition of India?"
