After reading danhirons' thread in the Oxbridge section, I'm now a little concerned about the amount of maths on this course.

I mean, I'm quite good at maths, but I'm not AMAZINGLY good, you know? I don't do Further Maths, and I still have to spend ages revising and stuff...

The degree isn't unbearably mathsy is it? After all, I do want to do a Chemistry degree, not a maths one if I can help it

*invasion* Does anyone have any experience with chemical biology or know its reputation, or related courses?

If you struggle with A level maths Oxbridge and Imperial (to put it bluntly) will be too difficult for you in terms of mathematics (though of course this is open to debate - I cannot comment on your mathematical ability from a single post).

dancing.barefoot - I'd say Lincoln over Trinity. Trinity's reputation for Chemistry isn't fantastic (I'm basing this on the number of people who had to resit first year exams, back when they published that information, up until last year), while Lincoln does pretty well. I also prefer Lincoln in a more general sense - it seems like a friendlier place to live.

:eek3:

My college dad said that his year were pretty successful in their first year exams. :ninja: Maybe the information not being published makes all the difference. :o:

Anyway, I'm not going to try and sway your decision, dancing.barefoot, since I haven't really experienced Trinity yet and I know next to nothing about Lincoln! Feel free to ask me questions though, even though my ability to answer them correctly might be quite limited at the moment!
Maths and Chemistry are my favourite subjects, so Imperial and Oxford chemistry are definitely my first two choices!
Yeah I get what you mean

It's impossible really to know how you will cope at degree level atm so it's hard to make any kind of judgement!

After first year it really isnt very mathsy at all to be honest. The stuff they teach in the maths course is basically pointless and irrelevant to the course.

The first year maths is quite hard: if we are just talking about passing it, if you can get an A at A level then if you work hard at it you shouldnt fail.

Really? :s-smilie: Why is so much emphasis put on it then?

Thanks for the heads-up - I'm predicted an A in Maths, so long as that is all you need then I'm happy. I enjoy maths a lot, so I don't see too much of a problem with some pointless maths anyway
This is an example of maths for nat sci (which will be pretty much identical to the maths for chemistst at Oford):

Those questions made my brain haemorrhage.

Those Maths questions look pretty nice... Have done some of it in Further Maths thankfully

I would score very very lowly if I did that now (definatley a fail and probably by a long, long way.)

Where did you manage to nab a prelim paper from (given that you're not on our network)?

I got it a while ago...it used to be freely available on the web

Ah, right. I forgot that the department wasn't always quite so secretive about exams :ninja: - it's probably so as not to terrify applicants
I don't quite get how the Oxford system works - I personally cannot get the exams but people at Oxford can. Surely it defeats the purpose of posting them online if you have to be at Oxford to obtain them.

Why does anybody outside of Oxford need to see our past papers?

I did some before the interview - but I had personally to ask (Teebs ?) to send me them.

Although I guess others might want to do them in holiday time.

What, some prelims papers? Finals? Most students who are here don't look at the things seriously until about a term before they have to sit them...
Didn't realise there was a thread on this!

Yeah I'm going to try my luck with worcester college.

Over 90% in Chem, Maths and Phys.

And another A in histroy too.

Just started AS further maths this year too. I think it will help looking at those questions.

What kind of books did you guys read and put in your personal statements?
dancing.barefoot
I've decided to go for Lincoln.
I think the general consensus is that if you're couldn't handle the degree you wouldn't get accepted, but I think many people think that they're not good enough when they really are. If that makes sense. :p:

I'm applying for the same course as you, at FOUR of the same universities. Just swap warwick for imperial...

Good Luck!
