which college? my best friend has a chemistry oxford interview as well
and i don't think you're allowed to write past questions on here. may be wrong though

Well seeing as i've been rejected the probability of you 3 getting an interview is heightened, so stop worrying and wait for the good news.

 I didn't realize you'd been rejected. That's really bad luck. :frown: I can only guess it's because you don't have maths.
Does anyone know what the percentage of people who get offers after interviews is for chemistry?

On the oxford website it says 40% of applicants are successful, but this number should have increased since some have been rejected. Perhaps above 50% now? It seems good to think you could just be battling one other person for a place

So sorry to hear that Mrcarrot, you have unbelievably good academics, and really, I think they are so silly for rejeceting you so soon... Still, I'm sure you'll be just as successful at Bristol of Sheffield, or wherever you do end up

Think of it as "battling off at least half of the other applicants" and it sounds a little bit more daunting!

But yes, 50% sounds about right.

I'd be interested to know more about this too... I mean I know the figures aren't 'odds', as such, but it'd still be interesting to know how many people are going for the few places at each college (or for each subject). Also, how many people have been rejected before interview?

The 40%ish thing sounds nice though... does it include everyone who applies for the course, or just everyone who gets an interview? Because presumably if it includes everyone, that means that some of that 100% will include people with significantly lower chances of getting in .

And I'm going to stop rambling now, it's not helping things at all, haha.

ahh thats awesome! what college?

I assume it includes anyone and everyone who applied for chemistry. And yes, I do quite like the "odds" compared to courses like medicine and PPE which have some insane success ratios.

I suppose with oxford there is a great deal of self selection in that unless you really are achieving top grades/believe you are capable you wouldn't apply. So I'd imagine there aren't too many candidates who have "significantly lower chances." Oh well, time will tell!

By the way, has anyone who is reading this applied to Merton for Chemistry, I seem to be the only one [on TSR] so far!?

Thanks. Yeah two ways of looking at it I guess. Which college did you apply to at Durham by the way?

University College. Why, you ask? Because it's a ******* castle.

Incredibly asinine reason for choosing a college, but even if I do get an offer from them, I don't expect to get into University College anyway. I'd be happy to go to any college of theirs!

Yeah, I know :frown:

I'd say the same on the maths. Luckily i'm not too beat up about it because I planned that I would be rejected by them anyway because of maths, so i'm just as happy to go to bristol, and if I still want to then I can do postgrad at oxford anyway  But I still am fairly gutted not even to have been interviewed...

Thanks  I'm almost certainly going to be spending my next 4 years at Bristol which i'm quite pleased about  But yeah like I say, I am a bit gutted. I had hoped for an interview.

I had received an interview from st.catz, chemistry.
I am wondering what the interview would be like and how to prepare.
Anyone can tell me?
Millions of thanks.

Am I going to encountour any biology, maths and physics there? I had finished A2 math last year and am currently doing chemistry, physics, economics and AS biology.

So, anyone been doing anything interesting to prepare for interviews?

...or anything at all?

I'm lacking motivation to do much at all right now :frown:

I'm quite stuck with this as well. Not really a motivation thing, but more not really knowing what to expect.

I guess just make sure you know what you've already been taught inside out, and look over any of the more advanced topics you might have mentioned on your PS...you wouldn't want to get caught out for not really understanding fancy bits of chemistry you've referenced.

But I'll be watching this space closely too! :s-smilie:
I've been doing stuff to prepare, but out of the two inteviews I've had so far (one at college and one at Nottingham), nothing I've worked on has come up. For me, the preparation is designed more so that if/when I get rejected I can say "well at least I tried my best". Knowing me, if I didn't do much preparation, I'd probably beat myself up more if I got rejected, even though that's pretty illogical.

So yeah, I wouldn't worry a huge amount if you aren't doing anything to prepare, chances are anything you do do will just be a waste of time. If it make you feel better though, do it

Yes that's what I think as well. More often than not, the things you prepare do not come up in the interview(I've had 3 ). The only sort of thing I would really prepare would be answering questions like 'why chem?' , 'why this particular uni?'. In terms of more technical chemistry q's..it's a bit hard to prepare for those!!

All the very best guys. Yeah, it makes it fairer not to discuss questions, but generally, wherever college you go for interviews, you'd be expecting questions that require calculus at some stage, elementary organic chemistry in a level, as for inorganic, know common trends and anomalies.

Got an interview at worcester today. Has anyone else heard?
