Regarding supplementary subjects, are there are any economics or financial mathematics options you can take, or are all the optional modules chemistry related?

The supplementary subjects are outlined here. They are all chemistry-related except for the language options. The most mathematical thing you can take is quantum supp. and that's not going to be of any direct use to any financial aspirations you might have.
Has anyone here done an internship abroad during their undergrad... and actually got funding for it? In other words, does anyone recognize this emotion? ->:banghead:

I recognise that emotion because I'm revising for finals :P
Well I recognize it twice because I'm revising for Finals and trying to get funding for my internship! So there! Basically, what I'm feeling is this -> :banghead::banghead:
Hi,
I am an offer holder for Oxford (firm) and was just wondering whether it is true that Oxford chemists use Apple Macs rather than PCs? - it's just a rumour I've heard, but I wanted to check either way before I get there

I'm an undergraduate at Catz and I think one of us has a Mac laptop. The department provides software for download that you can use at the undergrad level on both formats so it really doesn't matter. In all fairness you won't really need a PC at Oxford since you'll handwrite everything (you have to draw a lot of diagrams of molecules/energies etc.) and using the computer would be too laborious. Just take whatever you want really. It'll serve as a DVD player, Facebook accesser, Email recipent and on-screen reader for past papers and the odd piece of emailed work.

So I've spent most of today getting halfway through the Advanced Chemical Biology option lectures, and am now starting to think I should do the Total Synthesis option instead, potentially making today a waste of time. Also spent around 10 hours going through the Natural Products lectures yesterday and have just made the mistake of looking at the sample question. It appears that, already, recognising the words is as far as my competence on the topic goes. :afraid: :sigh:
What is the maths like in the course? I know first year has like a dedicated maths course, but do you do much maths beyond first year?
Does it cover the whole further maths AS or the entire FM A Level??

THANKS!

It goes a bit beyond FM A level. There's some stuff on differential equations and multivariable calculus that might not come up at school level.
Have to say, a lot of the stuff they were doing looked completely alien to me, and i did further maths a-level! I'm sure it makes a lot more sense when you are taught it though.

Is that in the first year or later on in the course? Just wondering if there is as much maths in later years? (from what I understand maths is a pretty large part of the first year with its own paper and all)

That's the first year. After that, there's some stuff on differential equations and Fourier series + transforms but that's only part of a single phys chem question on the second year paper. Alas.

oh ok, thanks
What are the rules about cars for Oxford undergraduates? I can't find them

You can't have a car. There's nowhere to park, for starters. What would you need one for?

If you have mobility restrictions that will need to be addressed but even then it is unlikely that bringing a car would be the best solution, since there is nowhere to park it at either end of most journeys and the streets in between are often pedestrianised or buses/taxis only. If you have a disability then you would probably be eligible for a disabled student's allowance that would pay for taxis between locations. If you don't have a disability, you just can't bring a car but then you don't need one - you can walk anywhere in Oxford.
