City University - BSc Economics, Good rating? Anyone done/doing this course?

Hi Guys

Just wanted to find out from you how the Economics BSc Course at City is rated? In terms of getting a job and going into Postgrad study at somewhere like LSE or UCL

Ive heard its got very good Job Opportunities but is this true of Economic Graduates? As in do they go off into good jobs, I dont mean Ivestment Banking just yet as anyone could work up to it and I want to do postgrad study anyway at LSE or something but coming straight out of Uni do they get offered Grad level Jobs with like good start pay rates (23k - 26k starting rate etc...) Also, is the Uni good in terms of Rep, its like around 25th I believe in the Guardian League Tables and around 40 in Times all in all not bad, not top notch but decent place to study for average student like me, and besides I want to carry on after at Postgrad (Look at last paragraph)

Dont really care about the Student Union not running any parties and being a bit crap as your in the heart of London and right next to Barbican with a shed load of clubs! So as long as there is a SU that listens to Students Im happy

Teachers/Lecturers good as in do you feel as if they care or do they just blabber on?

I love the location and as I just live south of London, In Surrey, commuting there wont be a problem (like 15mins to Morden Tube Station - Northern Line - From my house). This is has made me like it even more as Im a sort of family guy and moving out would kinda be hard, I would probably spend my first year living out at Uni at one of the halls but the thought of going up north to something like Manchester or Birmingham is rather daunting and I'd prefer to be at least in the same city as my parents, so at least they'll know Im studying and not partying my arse off lol!

So all in all, would love to hear from some people doing the course and people who have DONE the course and see what their job prospects are like and/or getting into Postgrad study at some top notch Uni's such as LSE or UCL

Also lastly, is it true that City is mostly filled with Asian students, I.E Pakistani, Bengali and Indian most notably? Im Asian so this isnt a problem but I actually mix better with other races, but mix fine with anyone so this isn't really a dilemma or anything, just a question

Thanks Guys/girls

im on the BSc econ & Acc course and ive just got into MSc finance at imperial college bus school, a friend of mine taking the pure econ got into MSc economics at ucl, but i guess you gota have like first class grades for first 2 years and a wikid reference thats wot we had.

however we both got rejected from lse (mainly becuase i didnt have a gmat-i applied for finance) im not sure why my friend was rejected as i believe lse econ does not require gmat

the teachers are cool (most of them anyway), but obvs if you mess about they'd be reluctant to help you out, be a good student and ull be fine

job prospects i guess as long as you get a first (at least high 2:1) ull be fine, i got a year long placement after my 2nd year quite easily and the ppl on the econ & acc course finishing with a first have got into IB (not sure about pure econ though-but past students on pure econ with firsts have got jobs at Bank of england and the government economic service etc, so i guess the prospects are good also)

and yes city is full of asians

hope that helps

Hello,

I'm a City Eco grad as well (i.e. 2000), and I can tell that from my class at that time at least 4 of them went to LSE. As far as I can remember two ended up doing Economic history, another to do international relations and 4th one ended up doing Msc in Acc and Finance so very competitive courses.

The most important thing is that you need to have at least a high 2.1, I don't think that you must have a 1st but it will help. Also it depends what post grad you want to do. Msc in Econ is more academic and often requires a 1st. The more applied courses like Msc Acc and finance, Msc Finance will suffice with a high 2.1.

Last but not least, your modules play a vital role, not just for your future post grad but also for your future career plans. Better to have a low 2.1 with hard Econometric & Mathemcial Econ courses than a 1st with easier modules which aren't maths focused.

Just remembered there was another chap as well who turned down an Msc from LSE, he had an offer to study Politics at George Washington University (Bill Clinton went there as well) and opted for the latter.

Just one question: How is the post graduate economics at city (in terms of employment/placements) as compared to, lets say warwick ?

I am planning to go in for a msc in economics and was thinking of applying to Msc International business economics, is the course good?
