Debating

Fitness is the entire package. It's how personality comes through in looks too.

And just out of interest, why was the circuit so opposed to FW's debater hot-or-not when discussion here's been welcomed and encouraged?

Everyone wants NHS. Tannyboy can sort you out with some pictures if you're interested.

Lewis - are you looking for an ego boost or getting material to use against us? Either way, Li - you're wrong in your scoring. Also - dont publicise my hotornot intentions.

Dear Poulanck,

In my defence:

(1) On swearing:
I wasn't actually swearing. Everyone heard **** off, and if everyone did, its my fault that they did. I was saying 'FARC off', in a witty reference to the colombian rebel group that Opp had been ranting on about. Yes, I also said **** a lot in the BPP final. But first, don't get the wrong impression, these are exceptions and I'm not a debater with tourettes really (come to my defence someone). Second, when the ever beautiful Adam is sitting opposite you, how can you resist?

(2) On debating badly:
I'll be the first to admit I'm a bit rubbish, but I was especially bad in the debate you saw me in because (a) I had only had three and a half hours sleep and (b) I was still drunk. I know, I'll have to be able to debate in that state if i'm to do well at uni...but I didn't. My analysis was a bit rubbish. We lost. We deserved to. (c) Nonetheless, I don't think swearing should give you an auto-fourth, as you seem to suggest. We deserved to lose because we did the worst job in the debate, not because I hurt your ears. (Although, I do apologise for that.)

Hugs and Kisses,

Sam '****** 28 times in 7 minutes...in front of an audience' Fenton-Whittet

Hello. I am very very sorry. The FARC joke is in fact genius! Just for the record I really didn't have much of a say in any of the judging particularly when faced with the glory of mr NHS (although I did have the privilege of agreeing with him anyway). Looking forward to seeing you all at Oxford!!!
In the words of Daragh:

GET A LIFE! GO AND KISS SOME GIRLS! GET DRUNK!! [AS LONG AS IT'S NOT ON A UNION'S PREMESIS!!]

Many people disagree with Daragh on many different things, but here children he has a point.

And you didn't even make an effort to hide who you were. And I thought you now had a thing for extensions, anyway :P

I've been debating for 2 years now and I stumbled on this post by accident.

I just wanted to say that the "elite" clique of debaters are horrible horrible people. You should make A LOT more effort to include other people in your little gatherings. I can for sure garasntee I am cooler than every single one of you (apart from maybe adam bott and lewis iwu, I love them sooo much).

Bye

You sound like a right prat to me.

Saying that you're "cooler" than us doesn't exactly make people want to include you, whatever the clique.

Guys and Gals,

I agree that debating creates in-groups, and to a certain extent that cant be helped. A lot of people who debate a lot are also friends. The important thing to remember is that the groups shift and change to include people new to the circuit, who begin to debate quite a bit. James Morris (to name someone from the top of my head) from Alleyns is just one of many new mates that i didnt know last year but whom i would certainly say is in the "group".

Plus debating isnt unique this this respect. Its pretty much similar in athletics, and other sports and past times.

Love to you all
Lew

Come on guys, don't lie to yourselves.

Debating is all about massaging egos at the higher rooms and stuff. You are ttrying to win by being more clever than other people. Let's not pretend you don't know it.

Why don't you introduce yourself to us then? We don't bite.

I remember at Boot Camp last year that I genuinely wanted to speak to and get to know people outside the clique, but we weren't given any free time. Hence the late night chatting culminating in Giles's infamous "I have never" eh 'Waldo'?

And yes, generally we do try to win by being cleverer than the other people in our room. Or, at the very least, sounding cleverer.

And what's the problem with that

IF you want to join the clique, feel free to join the schoolsdebate forums (http://www.lsdl.org.uk/forums) We accept everyone, no matter how well they can debate. After all, fentage managed to join  (j/king)
