Polycystic Ovaries

Well, I've been meaning to set up this thread for some time but, never got round to it... so, does anyone have, or know someone with polycystic ovaries??

I got diagnosed about two years ago and apparently it's quite rare before the age of 21... so I'm just wondering if there are any other youngish people out there that have this... and if so... how badly does it affect your cycle etc...

I found out by going to my GP after two years of, quite frankly, stupidly irregular periods... (they were literally all over the place...) and I've been told Im quite a servere case, and that this WILL implicate me having children in the future... :frown:

They put me on the pill to help regulate my cycle but that didn't work, infact it made me bleed almost constantly... which wasnt any good... now i've stopped taking the pill (which was apparently, a strong one) and my periods have dissapeared once and for all and the doctors are telling me there is nothing they can really do untill I hit 21... which totally sucks... :frown:

Any information on polycystic ovaries or anyone with any experience... Id be glad to hear from... I'm just worried about what to do, I'm being told I need to make a decision in the next few years about wether or not I want kids but i dont have a clue!! :frown:

NB: Polycystic ovaries is a condition where "cysts" are formed on the ovaries where eggs rise to the surface o the ovary every month but do not get released... makes ur ovaries look bumpy on a scan...

I know somebody who has it, she had to go on the pill to be able to have regular periods too. Have a look at http://www.pcosupport.org/

My aunt actually had PCOs and she had put on a lot of weight because of it although when she started taking the pill, she lost a load of weight.

Hi, I'm 22 and also have PCOS - was diagnosed in my first year at uni after I went 4 months without a period................I haven't had a period since.

My cycle has been affected quite badly but it is not the same for everyone, some people have it and have good cycles, some have it and have atrocious ones.....

I also think that I'm a severe case........and will also have implications for having children.................

I was referred to my local hospital and was in on a trial of metformin - its commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes but there is a link between PCOS and insulin resistance - hence the idea that this drug may have good effects. Personally I hated it - made me very hungry, sick or if I was unlucky, both at the same time, but again, the benefits or side effects are different for everyone.................tis perhaps worth a try and see if it works for you

Nothing till 21??? I'm sure how true that idea is - try getting your GP to refer you to a gynaecologist/endocrinologist at your local hospital as they can help far more..................

There are things they can do to help you when you want to have children so there is no major rush to make a decision......however, it is important that your condition is managed in order to prevent your condition from worsening and making it even harder/impossible to conceive

I would strongly recommend you get referred by your GP
I've thought for a while now that I might have something like this - I rarely get periods, and there is no telling when they are going to come. I started about 6 years ago now and I don't think I've ever had 2 periods a month apart. It has sometimes gone six months without anything happenning. I don't want to go to thedoctor though, as I'm a very motherly person adn I couldn't cope with being told that I couldn't have children, especially not at my age (I'm only 18). I do understand that if I went to the doctor at least I would know one way or another but I really don't want to have that to deal with as well as everything else in my life (yes, I am stressed at the moment, no, this could not be what is causind the irregular periods).

thats one of the stupidest things i've ever heard.

anyway, my mom had problems with it when she was 23 and also in her early 30's which made my mom's pregnancy with my youngest sister difficult...but then again she did manage to have 4 kids
girls with problems, PLEASE see a doctor. not knowing wont help ur situation any...on the contrary, it'll make it worse.....

I would see your doctor - having PCOS does not necessarily mean you cannot have kids, and there is treatment which can help to improve your situation.

Both Posh Spice and Jamie Olivers wife have PCOS and they have 5 children between them - a mate of mine also has it, and she now has a 6 month old daughter

there is treatment out there but its important that you get it otherwise it could be too late.

a girl I know has had it for ages, along with a lot of other medical problems. She puts her weight gain down to it, but she has no bleeding at all.

I think she might be infertile now, actually.

I havent gained weight but Ive been told I probably won't carry a child... its not much of a biggie now because I have NO urge to become a mother but, what about the future?? No one knows how they are going to feel in a few years time... least of all me... GOD, I dont even know which AS level to drop never mind what path my LIFE is gonna take!!

I HAVE been transferred to my gyno... but he just tells me to grin n bear it till Im older... Im period free which seems like a good thing at the moment but it cant be doing me any good now can it??

This may sound naive but I didnt realise so many people knew people with, or had, polycystic ovaries...

I think my stepsister has that. Either that or just a plain Ovarian Cyst. (I dunno if theres a difference)
Shes suffering a bit at the minute :frown: Probably will have to go into hospital again to have it removed again... hmm... they made a half arsed job of it last time (and the time before) as well i think :frown:

Jeeesh sounds nasty...

Apparently my cysts are of the small-and-many variety... they wont remove them until Im old enough and they're... well... big enough!!

There was something else I was about to say but... can't quite remember...

They are essentially the same, just with PCOS there are lots of them, sometimes smaller than if there were just one (which can get to be massive). And it's not necessarily that they didn't remove it properly last time; these things can recur.

I'd speak to your gyno about taking metformin.....PCOS is a result of insulin resistance and metformin can correct this thereby bringing back your period......doesn't work for some (didn't for me) but has done wonders for alot of people

push them till they let you try it......don't just hang around and wait

i have them too, i got diagnosed at the age of 16, i had severe pain and initially i thought it was my appendix or something, but i went to the doctors and they told mewhat it was. they then told me to leave it and see if it would calmdown itself and it did, i still get the odd twinge and my periods are so eratic but apart from that im ok

I had a knee operation last year, resulting from a netball injury. I once again injured my knee and am now 6 months post op (second time round). As a consequence I was off any form of exercise and eventually my periods stopped. I hated it because I was putting on weight... and I was actually missing my periods. I thought that it was because of the operation as did my GP and consultant. But two years later without a period, I have been diagnosed with PCO and have overall gained about 20Kgs. It realy annoys me, that my GP didnt refer me to a gyno when she should have. I dont know much about the condition just yet... but its comforting to know that Im not the only one!
theres a good chance that it can make you infertile too, but thats ok for me as i dont want kids  but for someone who does it can be heartbreaking to think at such a young age our fertility is taken away from us
I'm a bit scared now, because I get very irregular periods (c. 47 days in between periods isn't at all uncommon for me), which is one of the reasons I've just gone on the Pill. Argh :frown:
