Will i have fun at warwick?

hiya,
i am worried that i will not have fun at the university of warwick as have heard rumours that it is very studious and isolated and so from a nightlife perspective might be boring.
i am a very friendly and sociable person who loves to have a laugh, get drunk and go out and be around people who are equally as sociable; but as i loved the atmosphere and feel of the campus i would like to come here but i do see the social side of university prehaps the biggest factor for me.
It is not that i want loads of amazing clubs in a massive city - as long as i am with people who i love spending time with and are socialble and up for a laugh and a great time i am happy (i particulary like hanging out with guys who would be labelled as 'lads' for this - the fun and friendly but not sleasey kind though of course!).
Would i have fun at the university of warwick?
Please leave a comment and help me out
Many thanks!x

Yes. The rumours by and large come from people that don't actually have a clue about Warwick (which isn't that surprising as we aren't really a well-known university in spite of high rankings). Yes, Warwick is a campus uni surrounded by fields, but that's far from the whole story - in first year there is more than enough on campus to keep you fully entertained and outgoing, with Leamington Spa and Coventry nearby as insurance, then in second year you will live in one of those two towns anyway, again each with plenty to do (and Birmingham is easily accessible as well for the occasional bigger night out). I think with any university whatsoever, you can only fail to enjoy yourself if you actively try. Over the next few months the redevelopment of the Student Union building will be completed, resulting in one of the best events centres around. A minority of people are very insular, but I do stress that that's a minority, again one which exists anywhere. Picking the likes of Rootes for your accommodation will guarantee that you'll avoid these people.

Yeah Warwick should be fine - I've not heard any such complaints...like what's already been said..Leamington, Birmingham, Coventry are nearby for clubs. Warwick has a few nice pubs etc. Good luck.

I'm going to Warwick too and I love a good party, so at least there will be two of us... haha I went to an open day last week and there is going to be a new Student Union opening in September, and aparently there are good night on campus, a night called Top Banana is supposed to be good? Have also heard that Rootes is the accomodation to get if you like a party... thats where I'm going to apply!

Where else do you have offers from?

I was offered Newc and Warwick, and thought I had to go for the academically best one else I would not be achieving my potential, and I was WRONG!!! By second year at Warwick basically im bored. The nightlife is pretty crap, particually compared to my other choice. The people are, well, not a normal mix you would get at a less academic uni. For example 40% of my course are from outside the EU...... sorry, but they DONT mix and socialise like the sort of "lads" your after. Of course there are lads at Warwick, there are at any uni, but there are much much fewer here than most other unis. Anyway, to avoid people ranting at me, please PM me if you want some info. To everyone else, Im living there, its a first hand account, dont bitch cos you dont agree with me. If the best argument you have for nightlife is Evolve then you need to broaden your horizons..........

Define good
There are good nights on campus though- the union isn't too bad at getting some quite good acts in. Also, their drum and bass night is great, but that's probably just because I love drum and bass. There's normally something on at the SU every night, but if not, there's always Cov/Leam. Or just kitchen parties

Oh, that's sad :frown: Especially as Newcastle is such a great student city (well, a great city full stop) Sorry, that probably sounds as though I'm rubbisng salt into the wound there. I don't mean to.

I''m not at Warwick, so feel free to ignore this post, but I'll say a few things.

I'd prefer something a little more varied, with some proper cities closer (as Birmingham is a reasonable distance away). Coventry isn't really my sort of place. It certainly doesn't rank high as a student city imo and the it certainly suffered during the war then post-industrial neglect. But it's still a decent size city with a range of clubs and pubs and what is, in my opinion, a music scene that often goes unrecognised (as it's all about London, Manchester, Leeds, maybe Newcastle and Glasgow). So there is a fair bit on offer and there's Leamington (where you may live in your second and third years).

So the campus bubble is not for me but that's just me and yes, it's not for everyone (just look at Cj-Tj). But your university experience is what you make of it. Any university is going to have a large number of vibrant people (particularly young people). The campus offers things that a suprising number of other universities don't (a decent Student union for a start) and some on-campus entertainment facilities like the arts centre. It has been described as a marmite university, you either love it or hate it. Hve you visited it and, if so, could you give it another visit?

You'll probably have fun wherever you go... Very few places are intrinsically boring...

agreed! Also, uni life is what you make it... if you go out to have fun I'm sure will have! I'm sure we won't be the only ones at Warwick who like to have fun so I wouldn't worry.

Dont get me wrong, there are lots of people who really enjoy it, it just wasnt/isnt for me thats all. But its only fair to represent a fair view not just "OMGzzz Looooove Warwick" which can come across sometimes. You'll have the benefit of the new union, which should be awesome.

So are there people around who would not be considered 'geeky'?
Not that there is anything wrong with being a geek.
Just not the type of person i am - or the type of person i generaly hang round with.

Reply 16

Yes, of course there are (it varies a lot from course to course, admittedly - most of Maths are a load of geeks )

Yes. A lower percentage than Leeds in all likelihood, but it isn't as if they're that hard to find at Warwick either.
