Chill out mate.

All I'm implying is that at a university like Warwick the is likely to be more (holds up flaming shield) studious individuals than at, say, Portsmouth university. Now I know it's heard to make accurate generalisations about a student body of many thousands, but I think most would agree that a top university like Warwick, which lacks the nightlife and entertainment of places like Leeds or Newcastle, it will, in general at least, attract a slightly different type of student to other universities.

I'm sure there are many "fun", "lively" people at Warwick, and I'm sure many of the very hard-working, studious individuals at Warwick are also very sociable and lively, but I think the fact that there will be less "party types" at a university which ranks in the top 6-7 in the country, and has entry standards of in excess of 400 odd UCAS points per student means we can make the assumption that there will be less of those types of students at Warwick.

And no I don't go to Warwick.

you got a point mate.

I graduated from Warwick last summer after spending 4 fantastic years there.

The best way to sum up Warwick is that it is a "Work hard, play hard" university.

In general the people there do work hard as would be expected at a decent uni, so during exam time most people do work extremely hard. However they certainly make sure they party equally hard.

Warwick offers fantastic depth and breadth of sports and societies, and if they dont have a society you like then you can create your own!

It is different to living in a city, but certainly not in a bad way.

Im sure the majority of people would have a fantastic university experience wherever they go. University life is whatever you choose to make it, but at Warwick you have all the opportunities you could possibly want.

Well I'm hoping to firm Warwick and I love going out etc meeting new people, but I'm 100% sure you can do that at Warwick too! Especially in light of the new SU!! Maybe you won't have massive clubs like in a big city but they do trips to Birmingham to go clubbing regularly and it only costs £10 i hear to get the coach there and back and get free entry in one of the big clubs! But if you think you won't enjoy it then don't go... I'm definately going there because I immediately loved it and could see myself having the best time there! If you don't feel that way then you might start off with a negative perception of the place...

you were implying in your original post that in order to meet sociable people you would have to go and join societies etc which is total balls.

plus there are PLENTY of very much so sociable people, infact if you're as your describing 'unsociable' i'd say you're definitely in the minority.

the nightlife is fine too, there is cov, leam and for you freshers a brand new SU which should rock

Tis mostly the right people i am worried about to be honest.
As long as i am with people i love and having a laugh i have a great time regardless of the venue.
So i guess the question is, are there people who are very sociable, like to go out for a drink and for a night out regularly and not too overly studious at warwick?

You sound just like me to be honest! I have an offer too and i know it has a good rep academically and stuff but i'm worried about the 'warwick bubble' people keep talking about. I wanna do well in my course obv but i wanna meet people who love going out, having a few drinks, having a laugh, people who are a bit spontaneous etc. I'm applying to Rootes, so hopefully meet like-minded people there

And i know what you mean about the lads! The guys from my school that are off to Warwick are all quite quiet and studious.. but i'm sure they won't all be like that! We'll have to just be selective
im off to warwick and i dont consider myself to be quiet and studious- obvs i work hard but i love to go out and have a laugh.

i work with a guy who just graduated from warwick last year and he says although there are some really studious people the majority are up for a laugh.

most go to uni to get a good degree and have a good time while doing it so ...

at least there are five of us on here up for a good time!

Good times!
In all seriousness, I think if you stay in a hall like Rootes, you're bound to have fun becuase there are 924 (yes I checked!) rooms, so there's likely going to be people there who are up for a laugh. And also it is most likely that people who are not very sociable or who want to work very hard are more likely to apply for other accodomation, where they willl feel more in their comfort zone.
I'm having fun even if the others don't !!!

University is what you make of it. From my own personal experience, so far, of Warwick I can say that this is deffinately the case.

You will, of course, always find people who want to get a 1st in their first year; however, with most courses only requiring a 40% to pass the year, with no precentage going to your overall degree, many do not take it that seriously.

Roote's reputation is largely exaggerated, or at the very least did't hold up this year. I'm at Westwood (Hampton), and without a doubt we have developed the largest reputation for being the more 'sociable' of the accomodations (roadtrips, pre-drinks, parties, naked forfeits and, of course, the most fines in Warwick history!).

There is a new union being built, which will be ready next term, and with nights out to Cov (mainly Kasbah and Lava-Ignite) and Lemington (Evolve) we've certainly made do. Add in the odd night to Birmingham and the sponsered events, and your week gets full quickly. The Uni-Express do deals, leaving from the union and Varsity, to Coventry, Lem and Birmingham which include transport, entrance (with queue jump) and then a free drink.

Along with 'going out' there are many society events held throughout the year. This all depends on your attitude and what you want to get from university and how outgoing you actually are. Those who speak lowly of Warwick's sociability are truely uninformed individuals.

EDIT: Watch out in freshers week- we're deffinately going to snag some fresher's T-Shirts and crash your exclusive events. Hilarity will ensue. You were warned.

Thanks vey much thats reassuring!
What is the deal with rootes? Keep hear its name popping up...

From what I've heard it's the party accommodation, right next to the union.

Though I'm sure those are all scurrilous rumours :P

I picked Nottingham over Warwick as I decided the reputation difference is too negligible for me to pick it when I knew that the Nottingham had an amazing social scene and night life. From your other choices, it's probably best to ask what kind of events and stuff happens at the other choices :-)

You made the right choice! I went to warwick for 4 years and now live and work in Nottingham and its a hell of a lot better for night life.

As for having fun at warwick - to the original poster id say theres lots of 'lads' at warwick who enjoy getting drunk and generally acting like ***** (not implying your a **** btw but you know what i mean!). If your more bothered about getting drunk and having a laugh and dont mind what music your listening to youll probably enjoy the union nights.

A word of warning to anyone whos picky about music and might have more alternative tastes or enjoys live bands, warwick is decidedly poor in this area as are leamington and coventry generally. If you like general chart music, rnb or cheesy 80s themed nights your sorted (with the exception of pressure the drum and bass night which is awesome!)

Ah it wasn't just that. When i arrived at Nottingham in year 12 before I knew anything about choosing a uni I absolutely loved it. Then after visiting Warwick I hardly liked it at all, and revisited Nottingham recently and fell back in love with it. I knew if I picked Warwick I'd regret it for the rest of my life so it was a relatively easy choice at that stage. I fully understand the benefits of Warwicks Maths Department but I'm sure I'll be just as successful in life as long as I work for it :-)

:frown: I'm really worried I've made a mistake choosing Warwick over Nottingham now.

Well here's a little thing I've saved in the case of being asked a very popular question

I get asked this a lot, as you might expect XD. When I visited Nottingham last year, back when I knew nothing about universities, it stood out compared to my other open days and I knew it would be a great place to study, and the atmosphere of the campus and city was remarkable. I then spent a lot of time on TSR, and realised the general view of people here. I applied to Cambridge and Warwick as I knew I wanted to go somewhere which was respectable and had great scholars. I live near Cambridge so had I have got in I would have gone, but after receiving my conditionals from Warwick and Nottingham, I needed to make a choice. Follow my head, or follow my heart. I visited Warwick, and as impressive as it was, the nearest city was not one I particularly liked, and the campus seemed very business like, and the tour wasn't the greatest. When I returned to Nottingham, I remembered all the small parts about my visit in Year 12 and it excited me. Then I got home, and thought about it. If I picked Warwick, I'm going to be at a uni with a negligible difference in academic reputation, and regret not going somewhere I clearly loved. At the end of the day, a degree from either place is going to equal a challenging and enjoyable 4 years of study, and I want to enjoy the place I'm going to be living for the next 4 years of my life as well. Hope that answers your question, and sorry it was a big long winded, but maybe it can help some others also

Don't worry. I am from Nottingham and prefer life here at Warwick. Both are great places, full of great people and I'm certain that you will have a great time wherever you end up.
Rootes is an accommodation on campus for first year students. It was by far the best decision to choose it as my first choice as, whilst it is known as the party block and it is social and fun place to live, there are also limits meaning that house can be quiet when it needs to be. a.k.a. term 2 EXAMS!
I've met so many great people from my accommodation alone which sets you up for second year with getting a house in Leamington or wherever you wanna go
