Ok, have been having huge debate with my friends over this one. I say, obseity is a) a diease and b) the same diease as anoxeria.
Surely they are both the same thing, just different extremes of it yea?

I don't tend to think things through as i have the shortest attention span EVER known, so... is this true?

Maybe compulsive over eating is the different extreme to anorexia. Obesity is the result of it. I don't think obesity is similar to anorexia, because it can be caused by loads of things, not just by eating habits, while anorexia is always about a relationship with food.

Obesity is a physical state i.e. someone has a bmi over 30, or weighs over a certain amount compared to their weight. It could be a symptom of a disorder/disease, but in itself is not a disease.

Because obesity is not a disease, it cannot be the same disease as anorexia (AN). Obesity is extreme, yes but it is not the opposite of AN as some like to think. The physical state that is the opposite of obesity is emaciation.

An ED that could cause obesity is compulsive over eating disorder (COE) or binge eating disorder (BED). So, some people might see these EDs as being the opposite of AN, but they are not and as you say they are extremes. All EDs are extremes but AN and COE are really not that different. EDs all have similar causes and AN, BN, COE etc are all linked closely. In fact many EDed people are not strictly one disorder, they show a combination of ED behaviours/symptoms.

Also, do not assume that all AN sufferers are emaciated.

Meh, whatever. All EDs are misery.

Ha! We said almost the same thing! Except I said it one minute before you - and you said it much more eloquently than me. Bah.

Sorry, but no. It isn't.

It's so much more complicated than that.

I wouldn't say anorexia is a disease to be honest, more of a psychological condition. Probably like obesity

Reply 37

I'd recommend a book by Doctor Christopher Fairburn entitled: Binge Eating Disorder: A Guide to Recovery. Most enlightening.

There is actually a sortof "backward anorexia" in which people see themselves as desperately thin in need of fattening up, even though they're extremely overweight; so that explanation isn't entirely wrong.

I was responding to covered farm wagon's statement: 'while anorexia is always about a relationship with food.'

sorry that doesnt look very clear, meaning obesity could also be thought of as a psychological condition...in some cases.

Oh yeah, have you seen/heard about those americans that feed there wives until they literally can't move, because.....actually I don't have a clue why!! But theyre only attracted to women who's movement can affect the tide. Right oddballs!!!!
