oh, heck - conversation is a tricky beggar isnt it?

I've got a bit of a tricky situation.
I've got a guy round tonight, he cycled quite a few miles to see me. He's interested in me "that" way even though he knows I wont go out with him. He's sweet enough but I don't know him very well. We share a love of that sci-fi series Babylon 5 but we've been talking two hours and I've exhausted my supply of conversation, having already asked him about work, how he is, his family, and babylon 5. I've escaped up here saying I need to do some stuff on the internet and that I'll be back soon, but I've got to fill the rest of tonight with witty and exciting conversation :frown: I'm just too shy for this...and the knowledge that he likes me is making me shyer...
He's staying til saturday morning...

anyone got any great conversation starters/tips/advice? :frown:

Just talk about nothing and the conversation should flow naturally. If you're not interested why are you having him round?!

because I'd quite like to be his friend
and because he'd quite like to be my friend
and...because he's going to be moving into my flat in six months as one of four sharing flatmates (another flatmate invited him, and he's a nice guy)
I just feel like I'm letting him down by not being exciting company :frown: he kinda invited himself, or I would have invited him round when there were other people in the house too to make things easier :frown:

ask him whether he likes cake. if he says yes, suggest that you bake one together..
flour fights etc ensues..
all is well.
if he doesnt like cakes, get out. NOW.

Alcohol helps conversation flow. Not much but you could have a glass of wine...which therefore takes the topic onto which wine you guys like...that can last for hours. Then you can move onto talking about the funny things you've done when you've been drunk etc etc. Oh the topics are endless.

Turn your TV onto something like the music channel. you can watch all the weird music videos and laugh at them, talk about the kind of music you do/don't like, fave songs, concerts you've been to, etc etc... You don't have to be a complete muso freak (I'm not) but everyone's got *some* opinions on it - don't they??
Well, it worked for me a few weeks ago when I was trying to get chatting to a guy I didn't know that well...

we kind of sat listening to the music channels after we watched the aeroplanes crash, and talked on and off which works better than facing each other in silence, thanks guys! he tinkerd with his bike and I read for a while, which I hope came off as more like compaionable silence than me being antisocial!

it isnt that I dont find him cute and sweet and dateable, but I like someone else and I dont feel it would be fair to lead him on or treat him as a backup plan
so...not to my delight, no  but to the best for everyone

oh damn...

we just had "the talk"..now that wasnt the conversation I'd planned for! I think I managed to convey I was exceedingly confused about everything ON THE WHOLE PLANET! no, seriously, he wanted to know where we went from here, I told him I was too confused to pursue a relationship and bring him down into my confusion :frown:
was that the right thing to do?

Too confused to pursue a relationship? He might be over the moon now and see if he can get the nookie without having to worry about relationships and commitment
