Nightlife in Edinburgh?

What is the nightlife like in Edinburgh? My nearest city is Liverpool and the nightlife there is very good but i imagine it to be different in Edinburgh. Also applied to Newcastle which is renowned for the nightlife.

Very good. But Newcastle is fantastic.
Pretty good - not great for some music genres (I've looked and looked but no big band/motown or decent soul nights for example), but if you want a heaving dance floor, loud club beats, cheap drinks and free entry with barely dressed girls you'll be pretty much in heaven! I wouldn't try to compare anywhere with newcastle - it's the best, no competition. Edinburgh's also pretty awesome for live music - it's much better than it was for big name bands, and admittedly will be hit badly until the liquid rooms is rebuilt (there was a fire), but there's loads of small to medium sized places to see pretty much any type of music.

Do you know when the Liquid Rooms will be refurbished/built. Also, about your sig. You sure it's nothing to do with the course itself?

It says on their website that they've started reconstruction, and that they're aiming to get it done by the end of this year, or something along those lines. I'm still heartbroken about it burning down. :frown:

I agree with you about there being a lack of soul but did you go to the soul idol thing at Potterow on Friday? It was pretty good stuff - my friend's in the band and apparently they're going to be doing a couple of gigs in the jazz bar over the next few weeks.

As for Edinburgh, well I think the night life is pretty fabulous (although I can only compare with Bournemouth/Portsmouth...) George Street is where the trendy clubs are but there's quite a bit around the uni too. I would reccommend Oddfellows for the strange bar experience (although the balcony area is lovely), any of the pubs round Bristo Sq./the royal mile for rustic quiet nights out (library bar's at the unions still best imo), big cheese on a saturday at Potterow for crazy dancing times and although it's contentious (as a guy stated to me in the street - "you go there if you wanna get beaten up") with it's many layers, espionage is still a pretty weirdly fun club near the castle.

I'm sure. The course is awesome, but utterly pointless as I have no intention of being a doctor anymore.

I didn't even heard about it - the promotional stuff at KB is pretty terrible! The Jazz Bar is pretty much the best place for that kind of music but it has a couple of flaws (pretentious Milton readers being one ;D) and can be pricey. Definitely recommend it when it's free entry though.

Goodo. Just making sure, as I'll be there in a few months!

Wait, what? Liquid Rooms burned down? I don't know, I leave the country for a year and it all falls apart...

That's sad, anyway. Edinburgh's been very good for live music for me, less so for clubs, but then I was used to living near London. I've usually managed to find a club night that suits me in a venue around the city somewhere, though a few aren't all that well publicised - checking with venues, talking to people or hunting down organisers all tend to work quite well for finding things

Yep, the was a fire in the Indian restaurant above Liquid Rooms, and it spread to the whole building. It happened before Christmas when the exams finished. Luckily (if you can use this word when it comes to a fire) it was early in the evening so Liquid Rooms wasn't open yet, and everyone made a safe escape.

Really? The BBC article made it sound like there were quite a few people there ("about to go on stage" and such).

Still, yes, glad no one was hurt. I went to quite a few decent gigs there, but I plan on sticking around in Edinburgh after I get back there, so I'll see its new incarnation
Are they not doing Liquid Rooms in Faith or something?
At least, this is what I think my friends said...

Kushis is opening somewhere else too until its redone isn't it? Nicholson Street area?
oxymoronic

They're doing it in Faith yeah, but it's just not the same really. :s-smilie: And Kushis is now on the same street as Pear Tree, if I remember correctly.

And well, I might just be talking ******** about the amount of people there were in so don't take my word for it.

LOL, yeah it is a little pretentious - however, as one of the people who likes to go and play chess before the jazz begins on a Tuesday (because when you play chess you don't pay entrance fees, which let's face it would be terrible ) I say if you can't beat them, join them.

Though I won't get out the Milton. Too far.

I didn't know this - how very cool! Terrible chess player myself, my mam is in a scrabble club - that's about as close as I get!!

Anyone know if there are any good rock/metal type places?
