I am just reading through the Durham wiki articles and stumbled across 'St Cuth's is not technically a college' and I'm curious as to why not - can anyone tell me?

It's a choice that St Cuth's made so they don't have to obey the laws of the inter collegiate charter. It's just so they can open their bar at 2 in the afternoon (or even earlier).

When Cuths was set up, it was not a residential body so it was called a society, however Cuths has since become attached to the notion of being a society (tradition and all that jazz) so it maintains the word society. However, for all intents and purposes it is still a college. And ATM it's bar isn't open at all, never mind 2pm.
Get out. You get southern polys too btw. Well you would, but there aren't any polys left in the entire country.
Decided whether you're staying in LA or going back to Brum yet?
Prudy

Oh noes! But it's the best bar in Durham. Why isn't it open? You can tell I'm a bit out of touch.
Anyway, Prudy's right. It was the third "college" to be created. It was established to cater for those who weren't members of Castle (University College) or Hatfield. It was non-residential and more a club than a college. It's still the only "college" were you have the option of living out and retains a little more indepence from the university compared to the colleges.
So it's a Society rather than college. The only undergraduate society of its kind in the world so I heard. Probably crap. St Aidan's was also a society I think (it's not a college) and there's also Ustinov college which was the Graduate Soceity until it was given college status in 2003 (I only remember the year because it was in between my application year and Sir Peter's death).
It's a good thing, not a bad thing It makes Cuth's special.
hahahahaha I got into St Cuthbert's Society @ Durham, I wanted University College, this implies that someone at Durham thought that I'm inferior to someone else. Therefore, I rest my case that Durham really sucks.

Or it implies that University College was already full for your subject by the time the department accepted you, since that is the way it actually works.

In light of this new evidence, I again conclude that Durham sucks.
You suck and your mom sucks and your vacuum sucks get out
lol I'm sorry, I should've explained this a little more. It's just that I spent ages waiting for Durham, finding out that they'd cocked up my application, and then later finding out that the course I'd applied for wouldn't give me the accreditation that I wanted, so I do have reasons for saying that Durham sucks. Plus their website is near impossible to navigate...

Or that they were correct and that you were inferior to other applicants.
