Does upper second mean 2.1 or 2.2?

a 2:1 is an upper second - a 2:2 is a lower second

hope that helps
It's just like a upper and lower quartile of a 2nd class degree. Long time ago, lots of people are getting 2nd class degrees. Now they split it up.

Surely a quartile splits it into 4 though? Where are the middle 50%?

the general divison is
70%+ = 1st
60-69 = 2:1 upper second
50-59 = 2:2 lower second
40-49 = 3rd

So what unis are ok with either 2.1 or 2.2 to have access to postgrad degrees in finance and economics?

Especially interested in Aston, southampton, Exeter, Sheffield, and maybe Bristol and Leeds.

Cheers

For Bristol you'd need a first or good upper second class degree in economics for entry to the MSc Economics and Finance programme.

I'd imagine this would be pretty similar throughout the unis.

Edit: Click here for Bristol.

It seems that most of them need a 2:1 and above.

I have some websites that I gatherd with course content and entry requirements:

Southampton - http://www.socsci.soton.ac.uk/Economics/Study_Opportunities/Postgraduate/Programmes/MSc_Finance_and_Economics/default.php?NavContext=Discipline

Exeter - http://www.sobe.exeter.ac.uk/postgraduate/

Sheffield - http://www.shef.ac.uk/economics/masters/ma_economicsfinance.shtml

Bristol - http://www.efm.bris.ac.uk/postgraduate/msc_degrees/specialist_mscs/economics_and_finance/
http://www.efm.bris.ac.uk/postgraduate/msc_handbooks/efm_handbook.pdf

Leeds - http://webprod1.leeds.ac.uk/banner/dynprogrammes.asp?Y=200405&P=MA-BS%2FE%26F

Aston - http://www.abs.aston.ac.uk/newweb/
Damn........

Can foreigners get by with a 2.2 then? :p:

Borderline 2.1-2.2 are fine, or is it a stringent rule of theirs?

There has to be a top 20 uni that accepts 2.2 s

have you tried looking at their websites? that's all we can do, after all.
Well, a "good upper second class degree" would suggest 65+, not borderline 2:1/2:2.

i just call it 'two one' or 'two two' rather than upper/lower second

Of course foreigners can get 2:2 degrees. I'm not sure if the top 20 uni's accept 2:2's though.

Did you find the websites posted yesterday useful?

ditto.
A university will need to be convinced that a student is capable of working at postgraduate level. If the student has not performed well at a lower level (e.g. by getting a 2:2 BA) then it is a reasonable supposition that s/he will not achieve a higher degree.
Many unis I checked actually just say second ithout specifying,
others specify.

So 2.1 means you did better that 60% of your fellow students?
Anyhow,

which among Aston, Sheffield, Nottingham, Southampton and Exeter would be in the end easier to get into for a finance masters?
