Accommodation help and opinions – Lupton, North Hill Court or Oxley?

Hey

I hate to ask questions that have probably already been asked but my forum searches turned up pretty vague results.

I’ve really looked into my options for accommodation at Leeds and have settled upon the above three. However, I’m a little stuck as to which accommodation to apply for!
I’ve had a look around the outside and inside of Lupton, as I’ve a few friends at Leeds though I have not visited Oxley and have not been inside North Hill Court.
I chose the above three because of the price and I also thought Oxley and North Hill seemed lovely from the photos.
However and this is to people living in, or know of somebody living at these halls I would really like to know how you have found living there?

Lupton seemed a bit small and dingy from the inside (sorry anybody who resides here), though I really liked the large open space around the accommodation.

Oxley seems perfect; I’m just worried about the distance  . The walk from the university to Lupton seemed long enough, so I can’t imagine how long it would take to get to Oxley. How long a walk is it exactly?

I thought North Hill seemed great, I was just wondering what it was like from the inside though. Is it old? Also, I’ve heard that the living space/ kitchen areas can be rather small...
Is the fact so few people live there are bit of a low point?

Overall, I’m really just wondering what you thought of the accommodation, your opinions, its advantages and disadvantages.

Thanks in advance!

Oh, and also (and most importantly lol) how have you found the social life at your accommodation? x

I was in James Baillie, and North Hill Court is a strange little building in its grounds. The building is admittedly nice, and it's probably quite nice inside, but I'd go for one of the other two. I just don't think you'll experience 'halls' properly in North Hill Court, because it's so small and isn't really recognised amongst Leeds students.

I wouldnt go for North HIll court.
Lupton or Oxley you'd probably need to buy a bus pass. Especially in the winter when its raining etc. Oxley you'd definitely need a bus pass, its way out. Lupton is about a 25 or so minute walk. Id go for that one, but each to their own!

I'd go for Lupton. Really amazing location for Headingley, and right on the bus route. Or, alternatively, a nice 20 minute walk to uni.

Visually I rate Oxley the best of the halls, its in lovely grounds and it does have one plus over all the others in having its own gym. In terms of the social side of the hall itself, Oxley has its own bar where Lupton doesn't. However, Lupton is in prime location not only for shops but socially as well it is in the middle of Headingley so there are a lot of good bars, pubs and cafes within a 5 min walk from Lupton. Because of this I would say socially Oxley people know more people within their own hall than Lupton do, but Luptoners will get to meet a wider spread of people from other halls and 2nd/3rd years living out in the nearby area.

Location is the main downer to Oxley, because you have to do your shopping in the same place as the Luptoners (Headingley Arndale Centre) but its a 20 minute walk down, although you can get on a bus and they are quite regular. Given that you will be wanting to go to uni and town on the bus though, you will need to get teh more expensive bus pass if you live in Oxley or Bodington because it is outside "Green Zone"....if you live in Lupton you can just get the "Green Zone" pass. The difference in price is about £20 on a termly pass I think. However overall the bus pass is still well worth getting and becomes excellent value for money when you use it to travel down to and back from nights out in the city (they run till 3.15am), think of what you will save on taxis with that. If you live in Oxley though you do need to make sure you get the last bus back, if that means you're in a club open till 3am then I would say try and leave at 2.50 because there's a risk that if you're waiting to get your coat back from the cloakroom, waiting for a drunk mate in the toilets etc you could end up being delayed and where Luptoners will just have a sober-up walk home (25 min from Lupton to uni, so about 35-45 min from town depending on where you are), you would have to add another 20 min onto that for Oxley which can make it quite daunting, and if you miss the bus then you are going to be on a taxi.

Security wise they are both OK but I would say Lupton is safer as the bus will drop you at the Arndale centre which is literally round the corner from your residence. In Oxley you have to walk a few minutes down a path which is a little secluded, its a nice area in the day but it is not very well lit at night and can feel a bit eerie.

I wanted to apply to NHC but after speaking to students at my open day it put me off. One, who had been there for four years hadn't even heard of it!
Another who was in James Baillie, next to NHC, informed me that it was very quiet due to only having 80 places and often attracted mature students and foreign students who were often looking for a more peaceful time. She also mentioned that the kitchen areas weren't idea due to the kitchen table and chairs being like those old plastic picnic tables that had chairs attached, so you couldn't move them around really.

So now, after that news I'm stuck for where to apply. I know it's good to wait until the open day but it's nice to know in your mind where you'd like. I'm after self catered, within walking distance and preferably shared bathroom.

That's pretty much every point I wanted to make, but didn't have the energy to type out.

this.
its really weird.

I would say go for Lupton, a bit closer and not bad. What i've found is, all halls turn to **** so it doesn't really matter how nice it was to start with.

I'm currently in Oxley so if you have any (further) questions to ask, ask away

Lol I've applied to Lupton and I'm a bit worried it's gonna be horrible, but I guess you don't spend that much time in your room anyway and it seems to be in a good location!

I'm feeling Oxley for starting in 2010.
I was oringially looking at Henry Price but it seems nobody seems to get it, and Oxley appears to be far more sociable.
I think a bus pass will be worth it in the long run, i'm just worried i won't get a job, or it'll be hassle living so far away from the city centre?
but the cheapness is drawing me in

I live in Lupton and I love it
I know a lot of people don't apply here, but get put here because they can't get their first choice. However once you're here, everyone just wants to have the best time possible so it doesn't make a difference.
The location is amazing. Literally 2mins from all the Headingley shops, Sainsburys, Wilkinsons, Superdrug etc. Its also great if you want to go out, but not necessarily into the city, theres loads of pubs and bars to choose from. I think there's 5 buses that pass through Headingley, past uni and into the city so you never have to wait for one.
I never get the bus into uni, its only a 20 min walk, and tbh if you need to be in uni before 10 or you leave after 3, chances are you'll be walking quicker than the traffic anyway.
I personally don't think Lupton in small or dingy. All of the rooms are pretty big. The only common area in each flat is the kitchen and there's no common room for the whole residence, which can be pretty annoying sometimes, but the stairs/corridors work pretty well!
The outdoor space is definitely a bonus, there's picnic benches to sit on. In the snow, it was great for snowmen/snowballs and I'm sure in the summer, it'll be just as good for sunbathing

Any more questions just ask!
