Depends on the subject, however Kings is more well known and does have a better overall repuation than Royal Holloway.

If you want fair and unbiased views, I suggest u post this in the General Unversity Forum, because sticking it in a Royal Holloway / Kings forum is likely to create quite a bias :p:
Yeah, whats the subject though out of interest?

Kings...

Royal Holloway.

It's swings and roundabouts though really, seeing as they're both basically as good as each other academically. Kings is better for Classics, but RHUL is better for English.

i applied to kcl and rhul for music, but i rejected rhul as soon as i visited it because its in the middle of nowhere! seriously! it must be one of the only universities in the uk that isnt even in a town, its between a small town and a village. A VILLAGE! what are you going to do for fun? but sweets from the corner shop? browse the greeting card selection? egham is crap, it might be close[ish] to london but who wants a 40 minute train journey just to go somewhere that has stuff? kcl! x

Actually, Warwick and Lampeter are both far more 'in the middle of nowhere' than RHUL. And don't forget that London is only a short distance away from Egham, anyway.

To the original poster - have you thought about all the disadvantages to living in the middle of London, like crime levels? RHUL has one of the safest campuses in the entire country, after all.

Since when has crime been a bad thing. Geez!

If you ask me, I'd say go for KCL.
how do these schools math academically? i dont know much but ive seen some rankings, and RHUL is always one spot above KCL. So i'd say theyre academically equal . but yea in terms of surroudings, id go for KCL, althought if ur a nature person id hit up RHUL, it looks amazing and green, especially the founders building. god damn i love that building. amazing architecture!
Kcl

I had to choose the exact same thing, and ended up deciding KCL.
Thing is, I personally wanted to go to London, Central London. So Royal Holloway didn't really work for me. It depends on whether you really want a Campus Uni in the countryside or a more dispersed Uni in the Middle of the City. Making Royal holloway a university of London is therefore rather misleading as it is nothing like KCL and the other Unis in Central London in that way. The teaching however is excellent and if i was more interested in the teaching i would have probably chosen RHUL.

What did you decide in the end?
The 2005 Time Good University league table sees both universities ranking at 16 along with Manchester. I personally think it’s difficult to distinguish which university is the better academically so I lose my rag now and then when misguided people sniff ‘Kings is better than RHUL academically’. Nonsense.

RHUL classics department is also rated very highly, with the excellent English department always featuring much higher in the subjects’ league table in contrast to KCL dept.

I myself faced the same dilemma as you, but to cut a long story short I’m now at RHUL studying English - though I still have transfer offers from Kings and UCL standing. I’m absolutely sure now I won’t be transferring as I’m really happy where I am.

The common misconception is RHUL is in the middle of nowhere, with a non existent social life and brimming with Oxford rejects. I myself a city girl was horrified at the prospect of being taken far away from my beloved London! However I found that all the preconceived ideas I came to RHUL with - were complete untruths. I have had a very excellent social life and threads on the RHUL sub-forum will tell you why you’ll feel like you have a busy social life and have no time for working! I also got the better of both worlds because RHUL is so close to London, so I was nearly always here for the weekend.

I’m home in London at the moment and miss RHUL with a passion.

My advice is visit the university and speaks to the students. Never ever base your decision on what other people have heard about the university. Most of the time they’re wrong.
