Nearest beach to Northampton

I'm meeting a friend in a place close to Northampton and was thinking about surprising her and taking her to the beach all day just for a walk and looking at the sea or something, since I doubt she sees it often due to being inland. Can anyone suggest the closest picturesque sea-side town to Northampton? (Doesn't need to be a warm place since it's not for sunbathing or going in the sea or anything like that)

Any advice welcome,
Thanks

Also, alternative plans to do something nice around the Northampton area would be welcome since I've never been there and in case the beach thing doesn't work out I have a backup plan.

Ahah, Karting isn't really what i'm looking for, but thanks for the tip anyway.

Do you happen to know any website with England bus routes? There's no train to Hunstanton.

You're right there isn't.

I was going to say get the train to Kings Lynn and see how you go from there, but nope, you have to change in London (!!).

Try Skegness instead.

Northampton is about as far from the beach as it is possible to get in England, but good luck!

Actually, that award goes to Aylesbury, furthest inland point in the UK!

There was me thinking I lived along way from the beachest, my nearest beach is New Brighton near Liverpool (about 31 miles) followed by Southport at about 40 miles.

Blimey I could actually walk to that beach in Liverpool quite easily!

Ah...good old Hunstanton. Childhood memories of being made to go to 'old' Hunstanton to sit on the beach for hours before being allowed to go to 'new' Hunstanton with the fun fair and shops!

I remember Hunstanton as a kid too, we used to get fish and chips and eat them on the beach, only to have seagulls dive down and steal them, little *****!
Any other takers on this?

Northampton is really a boring place, as in it's just a large town with nothing realy special to do! Take her to Milton Keynes instead (short train ride from N'pton) and you can go skiing/snowboard/bowling/cinema/shopping/ice skating and many other things! If you're really set on a beach then Hunstanton is probably your nearest, but it would take you several hours to drive there and like already discussed I don't believe there are very good public transport links to get there either!

Well, ok, but still Northampton isn't exactly near :p:

I think I'm about 80 miles from the nearest beach (Aberdyfi). Would never go there just for a day though.
