Oxford and Cambridge to officially merge to form super-university; to topple Harvard?

I heard various whispers on forums recently about a merger of Oxford and Cambridge to form a "super-university" (named 'Oxbridge'). Apparenty, its part of a government scheme to topple Harvard as no.1 world Uni.... Anyone else heard about this.... You can vote, about your thoughts on this matter.... It's going to be amazing if this happens, altho, what would happen about the boat race...?! What do you guys think, should they merge?

First of all this is total nonsense. Second of all they already compete individually with Harvard and it wouldnt require a merger to regain their position as undisputed world leaders it would simply take something resembling adaquete funding (which is probably less likely to happen than this ridiculous merger).

Oxbridge is collective name for the 2 unis, its not a actually/or will be a university. Everyone knows that Oxbridge is better than Harvard anyway.

They had a cracker in the Scotsman today about a new EU directive which would force member states to change any place names with a gender bias or anything that could be construed as racist/offensive which actually fooled me for a couple of minutes.

I hope thats a joke.

Also, this idea of oxbridge toppling harvard is ludricous. There is absolutely no chance. Even if they joined forces, they would still be lagging behind in funding.
Realistically, i can't see Oxford and Cambridge even merging, look what happened to UCL and Imperial merger plans, and they are both in the same city!

oh yes. but a little before, since o comes before u.

so that's where oxbridge is... i presume that they'll pick up the entire towns and colleges with a big giant town-magnet and place them just before uxbridge?

but some colleges names are the same? how do you distinguish if they're all just before uxbridge? i mean are we going to have st. john's I and II or what? and who gets to be number I? this is so complex...

as for the boatrace, why not take the thames along with the colleges?

If they find some way of making instant transportation between Ox & Bridge...

Its a stupid idea, goes against tradition, and would be a typical governement attempt to grab headlines, about us having the best university. Of course uni's with bigger selection may achieve more...so what?
I imagine it wouldn't kick Harvard or Berkeley's/Stanford/Yale's arse, It would be doubled in size, and America has about 5 times our population..so N-O
In America maybe a distance of 80 miles, or whatever it is between Ox and Cam, is nothing....here its not...why try and emulate everything about American ways when we have our own tradition. Also Cambridge and Oxford don't like to take people who already live there, so how that would be resolved i dont know, if it would be to be genuinely regarded as asingle uni

The Oxford version, obviously. Ox is, after all, first in "Oxbridge".

Actually Cambridge is joining with Scunthorpe, to become Camthorpe..

Would be better if they became S-****bridge...

WEll why not combine Oxford with Dorchester to get Dorc-ford.
hil-fu*king-larious

But certainly what would be the point in combining anyway, seen as you would still be to all intensive purposes seperate. Its like 'joining' liverpool and manchester to form a huge city called liverchester. whats the point..?
