Nottingham Bursarys = crap

Is it just me, or are they rubbish. They give the same amount to people with a household income of £0 (which is a single parent on income support/people whos parents are disabled/mentally ill etc) as they do to rich people who get up to £34K. And the bursary is only £1K a year.

Is it just me who thinks this is bad, or maybe I have got the figures wrong...
I was talking about this the other day! If you live local to the uni here, you get £1000 busary, but if you moved here to go to the uni you get £310! I could so have used that grand, just to keep my head above water!

wtf? Are you serious the 1k bursary is only for locals? I thought locals got an extra 1K???

If that's so I'm not going to this uni...

So you're basing the decision about your future on the fact you don't get a £1k bursary?

Very short-term thinking.

I don't think that's true as I am most definitely not a local yet I still recieved the £1000 bursary.

I think I'm right in saying that provided your household income is below £34,500 you are entitled to the full bursary regardless of where in the UK you come from.

If you're local you can get an additional bursary of up to a grand (it's a local access scheme), but otherwise I think everyone who fits the income-relative requirements is entitled to the university bursary.

However I agree that £1k isn't that much... but it could be worse, some places only give you as little as £300.

Yes, that £1K is in addition, and normally is only given if certain conditions are met, such as being first in the family.

And the majority of universities offer the same sliding scale of bursaries, however the full bursary normally only goes up to households of £25K, so they're being more generous. Also they don't even have to give you that, they only have to give you something like £300.

You should look on FunderFinder, see if there are any bursaries that fit your description to supplement your income?

Why do people even need bursaries? I get the non-income assessed loan (£3000 ish) and have a part time job to supplement this, and it quite amply covers my living and socialising expenses. If you're eligible for the income assessed loan, that's an extra grand or so per year, and if you're really in dire straits you'll probably qualify for a government grant anyway - I just don't see how people can not have enough money?? It's practically thrown at you left, right and centre. And if you do find you don't have enough, get a part time job. It's not difficult.

No, I have other expenses I need to think about that would not be covered in any extra government grant.

Also, 100% of the money I would live off would be from loans and bursaries. I do not want to waste time that I'd otherwise use to study on a Saturday job that pays £4 an hour.

So you're prepared to turn down a place at a top Uni because yo want free money rather than having to work for it? (NMW is £4.77 and going up in October anyway)

I think someone else is probably more deserving of your place.

Hi LozengeC! where i am, its £310, even with £0 household income! The ones who got the grand were those who were living local to start with and i think those who got top results prior to uni?

I have not heard of FunderFinder, I will look this up, thanks. I know some people say(you haven't!) to just get a job, but it is not that easy. I have been trying to get just a few hours cleaning/few hours doing anything and the majority of places i have tried are not even taking deatails at the minute, i find it really frustrating, as here all thorugh the summer and despeately need to earn to keep my rent and bills payed.

That is unfair. What university are you at? And often the universities will give out an additional bursary to those with AAB+ to attract the 'better' candidates.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I'm at 6thform, and have a weekend job, which is so frustrating when you have exams coming up and want to revise then. :p: You could try getting a summer job, and working full time somewhere like a supermarket (they often have vacancies in the summer as some of thier female staff will need the time off take care of their kids). Also you could try selling some unwanted stuff at carboots/on ebay?

If you're in real financial trouble, and have taken out the full maintenance grant then you may be able to contact your university, and then may have a hardship fund, so you should look into that for future reference.

One of the major reasons I chose Notts was because of its very generous bursaries (compared to other unis at least). My household income is ridiculously low, with both parents retired due to ill health, so I'm going to get pretty much the biggest bursaries available - mind you, it's still not all that much, considering I won't have any financial backing from my parents at all (they can't afford it, not that they don't want to).

Consider this though, the government only requires unis to give £310 to students from the lowest income bracket, however Notts gives £1700 ish. Seems pretty good to me.

Sorry, you're right, I've been sorting out my finances recently and the overall sum of money I would have ends with '700' - just a bit of a brain fart :P
