Just some questions. No background details necessary.

I just need to know some facts about the morning after pill. How effective is it? How much does it cost? How does it work? Any other useful advice as well.

Thanking you.

The morning after pill is about 98% effective if you take it within the first 24 hours after unprotected sex, and then its effectiveness decreases to about 50% after 72 hours (3 days).

It's basically a progesterone mimicker, which thickens your cervical mucus and also makes the endometrium less likely to bind an embryo if/when it arrives in the uterus.

It costs about £20 over the counter, but some places will not sell it if you're under 16, and if you go to the doctors/sexual health/family planning clinic it's free and they'll be able to give you advice and so on to go with it.

It should NOT be used as a regular form of contraception.

I think it's gone up to £25 now, though you can't buy it if you're under 16. You can get it free from a Brook centre/GUM clinic etc. It's more effective the sooner you take it, something like 90% within the first 24 hours, but only 50% if you wait until close to 72 hours (after which time you can't take it). Try looking at Levonelle's website, that'll tell you all you need to know.

You will get a brief consultation with someone before they prescribe you the pill, regardless of whether you pay for it or get it free.

Ohhh no! :frown: I can't buy it myself! I'm grounded. I'd need someone to get me it without my parents knowing. :bawling:

If you're grounded, how did you manage to have unprotected sex? Didn't you did that before then ask us all questions about the morning after pill? Stop wasting our time and use a ****ing condom- it's not hard. Sorry to be mean, I usually stick up for you but this is getting beyond a joke.

EDIT: you might want to find out at some point if you're dying of AIDs are not as well. Go get checked out.

Obviously you shouldn't be having unprtotected sex at all, but if you're frequently worried about being pregnant why don't you go on the normal contraceptive pill? Much easier than running out the morning after the night before spending 20 quid to get a pill. xx

I do use a condom! I was really really drunk and the guy said he wouldn't come. I'm not stupid, and i know that this doesnt mean i can't get pregnant but i was so drunk that i just said ok fine. :frown: I got grounded that night.

Are you just not worried at all about anything other than getting pregnant? If you catch HIV that'll be the last of your worries. You're unlikely to be pregnant if you drink a lot and if he didn't come but you could easily be infected with all kinds of stuff you don't know about.

You really have to start taking care of yourself. You can't keep having these "I was really drunk" excuses because they just don't wash. As soon as you're not grounded get yourself down the nearest GUM/family planning clinic and go on the pill. You still need to be using condoms but at least it'll stop all this hassel everytime you get drunk and have sex (rather frequently).

We've all made mistakes like this but if you're not in a position to sort them out afterwards, which you obviously aren't since you keep asking us for advice and are currently stuck in your house at you parents' leisure, then stop making them!

I so badly want to go on the pill but my parents would hit the roof!

As for the drinking thing. Would that really decrease my chances? because (ok this won't make me sound any better) but i spent pretty much all of last week drunk. If that means i won't likely be pregnant then i am happy to admit that!

I am scared about STI's but pregnancy is more of an issue because i can't hide that from my parents as easily.

THe basis of it working isnt the mucus plug, its the fact it speeds the eggs progress through the tubes so that the endometrium isnt prepared when it gets there, so it can't implant.
I think so anyway...

Are you gullible, stupid or just have no taste in men?
What kind of girl would want to sleep with a guy like that anyway, who doesn't give a **** about you?

If you go to a family planning clinic your parents won't know surely? Either that or you could complain your periods are heavy and 'trick' your mum into putting you on the Pill (not the nicest thing to do but It's the lesser of two evils in this case).

I'm not too sure about the drunken thing, not sure it decreases your chances of conceiving but certainly increases the chance of miscarriage (they tell pregnant women not to drink afterall). Someone help me out with this, I'm sure I'm on to something but lack the knowledge (and to a certain extent I dont care anyway) to explain it.

Well it'll be difficult to hide HIV from your parents as well, hun, and any other STI for that matter as you'd have to get them treated and let's face it, you can't even get yourself on the Pill.

Why don't you just go and get the contraceptive injection (i wouldnt recommend it without trialing the pill first, but others have disagreed with me). that way theres nothing to hide.

I get the feeling though that fear of pregnancy is the one thing that might FORCE you into having safe sex, so maybe no pill is a good idea...

Just go on the pill...you don't have to tell your parents and they won't find out unless you leave the pack lying around.

Just FYI, never trust a man who says 'I won't come...' And by the way, although it's highly unlikely, it IS possible for a guy to release sperm before he comes...
