Accomodation allowing dogs.

Im intending to come up to Edinburgh uni in September. Im staying in halls for my first year, but in my second year im intending to move out into a flat(rented).

Does anyone know of any places (preferably near the vet uni- but not essential) that allow dogs? Or is anyone in a flat now that does, but may not be in 2 years time :P.

If so could you pm me the details of them so i can refer to them when i need to?

Also, advice on how easy you think it will be/ know it will be to get accom that allows dogs?

Any advice MUCH appreciated  xx

When we had a room going last year I had a couple of people asking if they could come with dogs, which surprised me to be honest. Edinburgh's not a very dog friendly place, almost everyone is in tenemant(sp?) flats with a communal garden (ie. a dog could cause many problems with green fingered neighbours in a well kept garden, or your garden will be an overgrown pile of weeds like mine). As a student in a student flatshare you'd be looking for letting a flat with an HMO license, who have to abide by certain specific health and safety rules as it is, so finding an animal friendly landlord on top of this hassle may be tough. It's probably not impossible, but I'd definitely try to avoid bringing your dog if at all possible.

Did you landlord allow dogs??

I know it'll be difficult, but i really want to bring my dog with me, to the point i dont mind if im getting up at 6am to take her out for walks, so not having a garden/ having a communal garden wouldnt bother me too much.

Thanks for the advice though .

You're lucky if you get a landlord which allows you to have a pet hamster let alone a dog!
Landlords charge high prices for their flats and they want them kept in really good condition. Flats in the main student areas are always in demand meaning they're not obliged to take you as their tennant, therefore, certainly if I were a landlord I'd rent my flat to someone without an animal rather than someone who did have one. Obviously you can look around and see but I've never known of anyone to have a dog or want to have a dog. In my flat contract it specifically states that no animals other than fish can be kept by the tennants, which is pretty standard practise I think.

Are you planning on living in university owned accommodation in first year? As you certainly will not be able to keep a dog there. We managed to have a hamster and keep it hidden, but a dog is a little more noticable!

No first year im staying in uni accomodation, but i know i cant have pets there, im happy tro leave her at home for first year, but not for 5 years of her life while im at uni.

My parents own my flat, and we wouldn't even entertain the idea. As oxymoronic says, the main student areas are not going to allow it, your option would be looking out of town a bit more, although I think you'd struggle to find friends in 1st year willing to commute just so you could have a dog.

Im going onto a veterinary science course though, so it may not be as hard to find people who also want to bring their pets with them. x

But it makes diddly squat difference what subject you will be studying in Edinburgh. You will struggle to find a landlord who will tolerate animals. I'm not sure how much clearer we can make that. You're not going to miss 5 full years of the dog's life; by my reckoning the minimum time you need spend here is only about 26 weeks a year. The rest you can spend at home, and if you're in Newcastle you can of course do weekends home. If you really can't bear to be away from your dog for so long then perhaps Edinburgh isn't for you?

Edinburgh's the closest to home.
I get the concept that i'll struggle to find a landlord, but surely its not completely impossible?

And the line you quoted had nothing to do with finding a landlord, it was in reply to the post saying i'll find it hard to find students who would want to share a flat with a dog/ want to commute too uni. Which, being on a vet course i reckon wont be too hard. I never said it would make a difference to a landlord.
Look, we're obviously not going to convince you that this is a really bad idea. If you want to bring your dog this badly I'm sure you'll find a way, but wait until you get here before you make any final decisions.
As we've said its not only a case of finding students who want to share with a dog, its finding students who also don't really care about where they live - you will have very few options available to you meaning you will have to take whatever accommodation you and your dog can get, and people are generally fussy and have certain requirements (such as living in the centre etc). We're not saying that no one is going to want to live with a dog, we're saying it will be difficult to find somewhere to live with a dog in Edinburgh.

But as Michaela said, do what you want - it's your decision at the end of the day. But you asked for advice and we're giving it to you based on what we know having lived, rented and owned flats in Edinburgh over the last 3 years or so. What you do with that is up to you and in all likelihood you will probably find a way to bring your dog if you really want to, but at what cost (financial and otherwise) and what comprimise that is to you, that is another matter entirely.
As this is in the accomodation sticky and somebody else may be wondering the same think i thought i'd comment letting you know that i found 5 separate landlords that allowed my dog (and she's a GSD), there were more who were willing to allow a dog, but only a small dog.

So if you want to bring your pet with you its perfectly possible.

I found mine by emailing around the vet school to find people who were currently living in pet-friendly flats whose flats were coming available to rent in Sept.

Ive not had any problems finding friends who minded sharing with my dog either, my friends are really excited about living with my dog (though i let them meet her 3 times and one friend came to stay in my hometown with me for a week and the dog was always around).

If Edinburgh won't allow you to bring a dog, bring a bear. Another splendid idea, courtesy of George Gordon Byron.

My landlord in Edinburgh is fine with pets in a tenement in central Edinburgh. (not that we have any but he was asked)
I think you are best looking for private landlords and might take longer, but of course it is possible. It is also not that hard to live outside of the centre of Edinburgh and have a 15 minute bus journey.
And I think the vet school is a out of Edinburgh anyway?

I have a feeling your not on your own, wanting to bring your dog, at least in 2nd year. I've been in contact with someone coming over from the US who is bringing their dog and cat. And next year, if all goes as planned with the vet school, we'll all be out at Easterbush pretty much all the time, so some vet students with more generous budgets might even be able to get small semi-detatched houses with gardens out in Roslin etc. So I'd say come to Ed, do your first year with your future plans in mind, but keep reminding yourself to be flexible and see what happens

hey guys! just reading this post, anybody that had success or know of anyone that will accept dogs could they give me an email n let me know of people looking for tenants. thanks everybody x

As said, you'll have a lot of trouble with this. Letting agencies will not allow pets. So you'll have to find a private landlord that will allow it. Finding one who owns a flat in a convenient location will not be easy.

Also, bear in mind that you're liable for any damage your dog does. If your landlord has to replace damaged furniture or pay to have dog hair (or smell) removed, you'll be paying for it.

if your based at easterbush, you shouldnt have much trouble, its out of town and there's plenty of rental property in penicuk and the surrounding areas...try searching for agents in Midlothian rather than Edinburgh
People keep saying convenience this convenience that and no one will have you, that's rediculous, are they saying there are no dogs in Edinburgh and that living out of the city centre won't be more convenient that travelling back to Newcastle at weekends to see your dog? Don't worry about it.
