There is none... except if your shallow or have really mis-shaped boobs...
If you have really small boobs then there is a point...some tops just don't sit properly if you have no boobs, so unless you want to shop in the kids sections for clothes then a padded bra is necessary sometimes! Some padded bras are obvious, some are not...I don't really mind cos Im happy to admit that I wear one. i'm not trying to pretend I have big boobs, I just want to be able to wear nice tops!

There are different kind of padded bras anyway. I think you can really tell wen someone wears a gel-bra!
Actually no! I wear gel bras, and no one can tell. Everyone thinks that I really am a 32B when really Im a 32A. It's such a cunning trick hehehe.
They give a cleavage I can't otherwise get. Make me feel a lot better about myself when going out and wanting to wear lowish tops.
I've never worn a gel bra... I like the ones from La Senza, they all have a certain degree of padding, just enough to make tops sit better but not enough to make a colossal difference or be noticeable (although one of my friends gets really drunk when we go out and likes to feel everyone up to see if they're wearing padded bras...she's not gay, she's just strange 
)
