Hey!

I can give you info for a couple of the intercollegiate hall...

College Hall has ensuites, the rooms are a decent size and the bathrooms are new, smallish but really nice! It also has a really cool-looking common room area bit downstairs with a pool table. It's a nice place if you can afford to pay for it because it is quite expensive in comparision to the others.

Canterbury Hall has bathrooms shared between 2 people, and some ensuites as well. The bathrooms are bigger than those at College Hall but not really as nice, slightly older and... a little faded/outdated maybe? The common room is small, practically no one uses it and the security rules are ridiculous and very anal. However it's a nice place to stay and it's less expensive that College Hall. Canterbury is very quiet generally so if you want to live somewhere a little more lively I wouldn't go for Canterbury.

Commonwealth has shared bathrooms (not sure how many rooms to one bathroom, but I'd imagine more than at College/Canterbury, probably 7 rooms to 1 bathroom). It has the same anal security rules as Canterbury Hall, but I think there are badmitton/squash courts there maybe? Not 100% sure though. Hughes Parry is roughly the same as Commonwealth with regard to shared bathrooms and anal security rules. Both Commonwealth and Hughes Parry appear to be louder and less quiet than Canterbury.

International Hall is a bit weird, Connaught's pretty good from what I hear, and I can't really give you any more information.

Hope that helps
What things are most important to you when you are choosing accommodation?

Each intercollegiate hall is slightly different in terms of facilities and feel, so some would suit you better than others.

International, for example, is the biggest and most diverse (the Gardens Halls are still three separate smaller halls, although run from one office), and consequently has the most facilities for the students - large bar, Costa Coffee with wireless internet, cinema etc. Likewise it has the most choice in terms of food in the restaurant. On the downside, it is very large, and so does not have the same homely atmosphere of somewhere like Connaught for example. College Hall is very new and has ensuite rooms, but is more expensive than the others, and so you would have to consider whether a private bathroom is worth the additional cost.

Have a look at each Hall and decide which one suits you best. Everybody is different, so there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

Well if you let us know what you find complicated, we can try to answer any questions and give you some info... what do you want to know?
Do you only have a slim chance of getting into inter collegiate halls since there are only a few places for SOASers? So you wouldn't necessarily get your first choice hall?

I didn't have time to do the accom. tour when I went on the open day but I assumed Dinwiddy would be fine
I wouldn't have thought it is that difficult, as the SOAS quota is quite big. All depends on what your first choice is, I guess, as obviously there are larger quotas in the larger halls, so somewhere like Connaught for example would be more difficult to get into than the Gardens or International.

But how exactly do you get into your choice? It cant just be first come first served...

No it's not first come first serve, on the UCL form they try to match your stated preferences with the halls, and the place availability. Admittedly sometimes it can seem really random, and like a lottery, but most of the time they do try to put you where you want.

Are there any ensuites in international hall? If not, how many rooms to a bathroom?
There are no ensuite rooms for undergrads at IH unfortunately. Bathrooms are positioned regularly along the corridors, and they normally equate to around 10 residents per bathroom. Once people get used to the idea of sharing a bathroom, they find that the extra expense for an ensuite is not worth it. There are so many other facilities at International, and events going on etc, that the sharing of bathrooms doesn't matter.

Intercollegiate being ran centrally by University of London with a quota issued to each constituent college of the university.

A standard hall could be your constituent college or private

Errm... I wouldn't think there are any particular special advantages.

It's a roof over your head and you meet people from other constituent colleges?

then why do people choose to apply to intercollegiate halls over for example UCL halls?

just to meet other people?
