Holland Hall reputation

am going to exeter in Oct 2005, have been hearing mixed responses to Holland Hall, the new 'super' hall. is it true ppl think the guys at hollland hall are 'ponces'?! and dont talk to them? or is this just crap?

Also how long after you confirm acceptance do exeter send you stuff about applying for accommodation??

any help much appreciated.

Hey,
Ive also applied to Exeter for October as my firm choice. I sent off my firm decision to UCAS just over a month ago and I haven't heard anything about accomodation or anything, but I don't think we are meant to receive this till later in the year.
I was also thinking about applying to Holland Hall. I have absolutely no idea about the 'type' of people that live there (although as it is so big, I would have thought there is a huge diversity of ppl?) I also think that as it has only been open for a year, it cant really have a set 'type' yet? But then again I have no idea........ However, I do have a friend who is in halls there atm, and she likes it, but she says she feels it lacks the atmosphere of some of the other more established halls. She says it does feel more like a hotel than a hall, and I suppose this is fulfilling its purpose of a conference centre too. I think it really depends on what you want from a hall. I think it probably is the best in terms of facilities- I think all of the rooms are en suite.
I was going to apply there, but now I'm not so sure. I definitely want to go catered, but I'm thinking of maybe applying to somewhere like Hope Hall? But the website isn't fully functioning yet, so until I get all the info on prices, food etc, I'm not really sure.
Hope that helps?!

Btw, what subject are you doing next year?
Erm, it seems to have the reputation of being quite antisocial and merely a big conference centre. Plus, the bar is apparently crap (Dutch Courage - what a name!). However, don't believe that the crapper halls are necessarily better for social life: I lived in Duryard (all people there will resent you if you live in Holland btw) and felt it earned its shitty reputation in every way. However, some people love it and would never leave (the crazy bastards - I did!). I live in self catering now, which I like far better.
Personally, I would go for Pennsylvania court over Holland - its just as good and with better surroundings, and loads more people like it.

heya. im in the exactly same boat. The reason there is a certain 'type' of people there is because it it so expensive that it tends to be full of rich kids. Its gone up to £130 a week - now i go to a private school but even my dad will struggle to pay that each week for me. Hence - it will prbably be dominated by sloanes. (But in my opinion they get way too much bad press and a lot of them, albeit have too much money than sense, are still very lovely people.)

If we're honest, we probably wont get into there anyway as its so competitive so we shouldnt worry too much about how nice it is. I want to go to mardon although i really dont want to share a room.

If you wanna know more about accomodation go to www.guild.ex.ac.uk and then at the bottom click on the 'go to xnet forums' linkage and theres loads of debates on halls on there. most people seemed to be against holland.

oh and also. i emailed them about accomodation application forms about a month ago and they said i would get it in three weeks. but still nothing. dont worry though. aparently its not first come first serve as they allocate all the rooms after the exam results.

hmm seems holland hall isnt great, but wouldnt mind a double bed and ensuite... but atmosphere and people are v.v. important, hope to get accommodation info soon.

Im doing straight Law- never know, might be in some lectures together!
Yeah, just wanna get accomodation sorted soon, but ive no idea when the forms are meant to be coming through.
The idea of an en suite does seem v tempting, but haven't spoken about it with my parents yet!
I really like the look of Hope Hall, www.hopehall.co.uk, or maybe Lopes, but until I get more info, im not sure.
Just to point out, unless you have an unconditional offer you are very unlikely to get a place in holland hall and if you put it down as your first choice you will more than likely end up on st lukes....which is what happened this year.

ickle_katy - you sound like you have quite an insight. can i pick your brain about which accomodation to chose?

firstly why would putting holland down make you go to st lukes? surely theyll just give you your second or third choice?? Also, i want to put mardon as my first, but if i put that i didnt want to share and that id rather have my second or third choice if that was the only way id get into mardon - would they be ok with this??

I want to go to holland/mardon/hope - what would you suggest my best bet is? i.e. in which order shall i put them so as to make sure i get at least one. sorry to ask so many questions.

ok, this is how we think it works.....once the people with unconditional offers giver they're accomodation forms in, they get their firts choice. Now, these are likely to be people who will want to go to holland hall simply because they are the type of people who have aken a gap year and either travveled the world on daddys money or have worked to save to come....either way htey have money!

So then In aug, once the firm conditional offers become unconditional, you all get your first choice....well if you can imagine there will only be a few spaces left at this stage in halland hall, so everyone else goes into a holding pot. Once everyone who can be accomodated in their first choice have been done, people get put in their second choice....but marden and hope are likely to be full also by now, so for those who have holland, hope and marden you now have no preference - whic means you go to the back of the que.....where as those who put dyryard as a third choice.... will go there. Once everyone has satisfied they're first second and third choices the rest are put where ever there are beds....which with a decresing number of sport scientists wanting catered accomodation means st lukes.....which btw is great and im yet to meet anyone that now wishes they'd been on main site.

and i thought marden was all sharing....

so if i was you id put hope.

I'm also going to Exeter in October. I want to go self catering, which hall would you say is the best?
Yep, thats what happened to me - put duryard as 3rd choice and was given it :frown: But not there any longer

well, that depends on what you want. the reason halls are of different qualities because one box does not fit all. if i were choosing i would go lofrawda enhanced...but then thats me.

i think im gonna be really really risky and put mardon as my first choice but say that i snore or something so that i can get a single room. realy doubtful i know but 4 from my school are going to hope/lopes and i really dont want to be seeing them in the badger each night. rather have my own bar.

duryard may not be a clinical as holland but in shabbier enviroments you kinda all rub along together and forget it!! also in the summer you will love the grassy area for frisbee rugby rounders!! party central!

Hey everyone,

I figured this would be the best place to accomadation styley questions! What is Holland Hall like? Does it have its own bar? Good atmosphere? Close to campus? Anyone know what the rooms are like? Im just trying to get an overall picture coz i think that will be my first choice. Any help appreciated!

Holland hall=A Hotel.

It looks like one, it has its own bar and restuarant style dinning room, the rooms are of a very high standard but space is very limited...and dont expect storage space (its designed for people who stay a week they dont need storage space). The atmosphere is exactly how you would find in a hotel...non existant. and yes its close to campus as its in the middle of campus!

And as ive said before, unless you have an unconditional offer, there is little point in you applying.

i wouldnt make you decision purely on what ickle_katy has said for she is extremely negative. I have asked loadsof people about holland and i have decided not to apply as it doesnt sound right for me. But it still sounds like a cool place and the standard of accomodation is awesome. uni is what you make of it, so if you are a very sociable person then whatever layout the rooms are, you will find ways of meeting friends.

it sounds like its very hard to get in, but dont listen to Katy and not bother at all. Half of the space ends up with gap years students but that still leaves 200 spaces for the rest of us. someones gotta go for it. aparently its one in every four but with the prices going up to £130 that may not be so high..but then again no one really knows. someone said that if you put holland first you will end up somewhere shitty as all your second and third choices will get filled up. But that cant be too accurate as my friend applied to holland first, penny c (the other en-suite site) second and he got his second choice.

Just go for whichever one you wnat and hope for the best.
