What jobs do really rich people have?
For example if i became a doctor i would earn around 80k basic pay by the time i was around 32ish, That is supposed to be the second best job in the UK(the best is around 100k I think, according to Government statistics  ), and GP's aren't that rich are they, they are just 'well-off' What jobs are out there that make people fall into the rich category rather than just the financially comfortable one? Like 160k+ jobs?

My friend, dear old Google with help =] Here be a good link. I typed in top paying jobs  BTW, money can;t buy you happiness and you can't do anything with money once your dead. ^___^

A mid-20s specialist software engineer who's contracting can make £150k-£200k/year depending on specialism, although it's still "well-off" territory rather than "rich".

stock brokers, financial ******* ect....

thats where the Uk gets most of its money from anyways-- the financial sector

or have a go setting up your own business (but bear in mind you could loose everything!!)... and everyone has that dream of setting up their own business and being a millionaire -- lol, my friend tried and failed miserably
There is no such thing as a well paid 'job' the top salaried people are all entrepreneurs in one way or another. The alternative to that is to 'marry rich' or 'inherit' alot of wealth.

Even investment banking, management consultancy etc only a handful of people can become MD or on the board so don't think just because you end up as an analyst as a graduate that you'll end up as an MD by 30. Loads of people burn out and quit b/c of the sheer banality of the work. A sizeable amount get fired year on year too.

Wine merchant, auctioneer, furniture restoration, the Army, etc.
Though these jobs do not pay a brilliant wage, they are prime choices for those who are already rich. It's more of a social thing.
The 'Eco Warrior' bandwagon is also popular as of late.

Then of course, there's the usual choices: Law, Banking, blah blah.

Most rich people don't make their money through their salaries/takings.

Make of that what you will

There should be a cap on how much you earn. No job is worth 200k or whatever

I think that if you had this, then the government would be highly out of pocket. and if there was an upper limit, then it will just readjust and it will be a similar system i.e. minimum wage will be 10p an hour and the "millionaires" will earn 200k!

LOL @ being a medic for money.

At least do it properly and do dentistry

dentistry looks like the most boring job ... in the world!

Because it would alleviate suffering for all the poor bastards who live on sod all. I don't believe anyone puts in effort that substantial to warrant that much money. Ok, say up to 200k. But beyond that, it's not only about effort. It's about privilege, chance and being born into things. Some people are busting their ass on two jobs working 80 hours a week and are on minimum wage. So why should some jobs be worth such an extraordinary amount? No one needs that much. It's greedy.

Of course, this is the way things much be under capitalism.

whilst this is true of the first generation (i.e. our parents) i dont think that our generation (kids of the 80s/90s) can use this excuse. you make your own opportunities, you work hard in school and go to the university, get the summer work exp. and then get that grad job. true that a lot of people are "lucky" to be in the "right" family circles but i think that a working class girl/boy can move his social class if they work hard enough!

Just because it's possible, doesn't mean it's the norm.

If I tell you being born in a certain area means you have a 10% chance of going to uni, does that mean you have the same start as someone who is born in an area where 90% of kids go to uni?

LOL.

Disagree. I have no problem with the idea that someone is 100x more productive than another person. If they are creating/offering something of value then the market will remunerate them accordingly.

Conversely, I also feel that certain industries wouldn't be missed such as cigarette companies or possibly investment banks but even they provide large sums of tax to the government and offer a service people want via IPOs, M&A amongst other transaction services.

I also believe sport has become a joke in and of itself when people earn ridiculous sums for not creating much if any value. But thats how society works. Strange things are valued for one reason or another like Grace from Big Brother taking her clothes off in Zoo/Nuts and securing 6 figures as a result and being able to bank with Coutts.

But to say that there should be a cap on salaries/bonuses etc is something I don't agree with.

If you have the drive, and recognise that there is a "better life" out there, you will work as hard as you can to escape the poverty.
true we are not born equal, but you have to make the most of what you've got.

doctors earn a lot but they are one of the most taxed professions due to their high earned income. rich people tend to have a lot passive and portfolio income generated by the assets they accumulate. passive and portfolio income is also the least taxed type of income.
so generally the really rich people (donald trump, kiyosaki etc) have either created businesses that generate passive income or have invested in rental real estate property, gold, silver, oil etc.

Well, yes being a doctor you can earn over 100k but you have to stuady for about 8+ years after school. Investment bankers, stockbrokers, hedge fund workers get paid sixe figures if they perform well and have to work about 15 hours a day and sell their soul to the devil

Footballers earn much better than Docs, GPs, Bankers, CEOs
Self employed individuals who own their own businesses are "rich"...because they don't pay tax! Everything penny they spend is an expense to their business...they then buy properties to rent/sell and retire into real estate earning a cosy sum.

*of course the business has to be successful for this theory to work!

Footballers do not earn more than CEOs. Even at the top end. CEOs have additional benefits i.e. preferential shares/discounted shares, non-exec positions at other firms and other sources of income.

Footballers merely have a v.high wage per week and a 10 year career if they're lucky. Yet this can easily be cut short or not reap the fullest dividend i.e. long-term injury, reckless spending (if you've been clubbing in London, you'll know how stupid some of these guys are)
