If you're applying for a course with statistics, surely it would be of more benefit to you to take the stats module at A2?

I totally agree.... If you want to study maths+stats, do as much stat as possible unless school does not allow you to.. (or if you are not likely to meet the offer due to the difficulty of S3 etc as it probably is much harder than M1,M2, D1 etc)

But I would not worry too much.. A friend of mine applying for maths+stats is only doing S1,S2 although that is because we do not have choice at all and got offer in every uni..

    statistics is easier
    mechanics is more valued

edit: i just read your first post, if you want to do maths with stats then chose stats obviously!!! but try to have mechanics modules aswell because they are valued a lot more

    just chose:

    c1 c2 c3 c4 s1 s2
    fp1 fp2 fp3 s3 m1 m2

or if you're confident then go for:

    c1 c2 c3 c4 s1 s2
    fp1 fp2 fp3 s3 s4 s5
then do additional further and do some mechanics

The problem is I did statistics in the 1st half term, then i realised I wanted to apply for Maths in Cambridge, that is why I dropped and changed it into Further Maths. Now, I wish to study Maths and Stat, but I do not want to repeat the whole course again. Moreover, we nearly finished the syllabus(S1, S2, S3) at that time and I have self-studied the rest of the course. But my college does not allow me to take exam of Statistics. What should I do?( Give me some advice plz!

Further maths will have been more useful than the stats anyway. Good choice

It obviously depends on what course you're applying for. I doubt mechanics would be 'valued a lot more' if you're applying for something like Economics or Maths with Stats.

I doubt it makes much of a difference what applied modules you take for A-level maths/further maths, lots of people (possibly most?) have no choice.

Nope, you're right. It doesn't make much of a difference when applying - but it will be more helpful once you're on the course. Certainly doing statistics instead of mechanics won't put you at any disadvantage either when applying for such courses, if anything, it will be an advantage.

I don't think stats at a-level is particularly relevant to stats modules at university.

In terms of the actual courses at Cambridge, I think you will find the mechanics options considerably more useful than the stats ones. In terms of your exams, if you're 'Cambridge standard', then you will probably not have much trouble getting AA in M/FM whatever modules you take. But for STEP you will find that the mechanics options give you more 'bang-for-the-buck' than the stats ones.

So if you can, do the mechanics options. If you can't, I'm sure you'll be fine doing stats instead.

That's a broad statement. I found the mechanics modules easier and got better marks in them.
