I'm having trouble trying to define what a prestigious uni is online does it actually exist like it's given a prestige or is it just a classing thats not formal? thanks
A uni which is held in high regard, eg Oxford, Yale
generally a top 15 university in this country is deemed as prestigious- this is a very loose definition of course though.
so is it like a formal thing thats given to it by i dunno but ya no... or does prestige not actually exist? but just an informal description?
cos would you say liverpool or manchester are prestigious?
generally the ones near wales
so prestige doesn't actually exist then?
Do you not understand the concept of prestige? To answer your question, I'd say Manchester is prestigious, Liverpool is not.
no, i don't understand the concept of prestige hence the asking...
A university where its degree would be well respected by employers, etc...
I'd say edinburgh is prestigious, east anglia is not
oh so its just another word for 'respected university' then and isn't actually a tag as in like rankings
Subjective - there is no "list of 100% prestigious universities". Generally Universities with a good heritage and high academic standards. I'd say the Sutton Trust group is probably a good indicator out of all the meaningless "bunchings".
No, it's not an official tag like the Russel Group, if that's what you mean. It's a subjective concept refering to how it's generally perceived by other people. To be prestigious, it normally has to be quite difficult to get admitted into, requires high grades and offers very good ocurses and lecturers.
Most people tend to just use league tables to determine prestige though, and look at maybe the top 10/15/20.
I'd say, generally it's the Red-brick universities, most of the Russell Group (Newcastle and Liverpool are good, but you could hardly call them prestigious), and some other ones like Durham and Warwick.
one which is hard to get into? maybe
Oops, I meant to say most of the Red-bricks....
But I think it's really hard to define a prestigious uni. It does depend on what region of the UK you are in as well, hence why the majority of northern Unis aren't seen as prestigious down here but Exeter is.
Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, LSE.
