I haven't made my first choice decision yet for english literature, and it's between Cardiff and Bristol. I know Bristol has a better reputation generally but was wondering if people could offer their opinions as to which uni they think is better as a whole. My best friends are all going to Cardiff, so that is swaying me a little since i like the idea of having people i know around. Any ideas would be great, thanks.

Bristol will give you better job prospects as it is a very well respected university. Cardiff's very good but not up there with the best. Choose where YOU want to go, don't follow your friends - university's all about meeting new people! Cardiff's not far from Bristol anyway if you miss them that much.

Bristol is great for its reputation and English - well done for getting in! I say go to Bristol - you can always visit your friends sometimes and see them in the holidays. Uni is always a good opportunity to meet new people and being with your friends could hamper that.

Have you checked the course structures of both unis out? Either appeal to you more than the other?

I doubt location will be a major factor in this decision. Both are excellent cities in all aspects. Both are close to each other. I know someone at Bristol who goes back to Cardiff very regularly to keep in contact with everyone, so while I appreciate it's different to living in the same city as your friends, you could still be meeting them on a weekly basis from Bristol.

Rep wise, Bristol's meant to be better than Cardiff, but Cardiff's English department is pretty immense too. Prestige, Bristol would probably edge it, but there isn't that much in it.

Basically, you've done well to get two offers from two great unis and really, considering the insignificance of other factors in this case, course content should really precedent and er, follow your instincts.

well i do english lit in cardiff and i love it, the only bummer is that when i applied, cardiff was in the top ten unis in the country and now it's slowly slipping down the ranks....

but it is a really good course, there are some great lecturers and very interesting modules, in the first year you get a brilliant overview of english lit and then in years 2 and 3 you can specialise in what interests you.

in the end though you have to pick the course that is right for you, don't come to cardiff just because everyone else is coming too - i came here totally on my own and i've been just fine.

    Hey there,
Choosing a uni is so hard =[
Be carefull that you aren't looking too much at league tables, the only way way which Bristol has more prestige is in the Times table, the Guardian and Push show differently. Therefore as both are Russell Groups and offer great courses just think about where you can imagine living!
The fact that the league tables change prove that perhaps they aren't the most solid of guidelines. Well done for getting places at both Next year I'm going to Cardiff and my Boyfriend to Bristol, and I'm sure we will see eachother loads, so don't worry about your mates
