Hey, I'm starting at Surrey in September. Very excited! Where are you going? I didn't realise that the degree was available yet.
my view is that its interesting, yet repetitive..and has a high workforce turnover for a reason

i actually applied to surrey but they told me that it 'wouldn't be wise' to stay i the accommodation after Christmas as nursing and midwifery students get 'top priority' they gave me an unconditional but turned them down and am doing the degree at Canterbury Christ church. yeah, they've only just brought the degree out for Sep 09 and my family want me to do the degree so looks like i'm goin Kent :frown:

Oh I see, yes it seemed that accomodation was only until Christmas and then you'd have to sort yourself out and get a place near your hospital, although not 100% sure on that. Luckily I'll be commuting from home.
When did you have your Surrey interview btw? Mine was 24th Feb.
Let me know how the course goes, haven't seen many ODP's on here at all for some reason lol.

i think mine was in January and i really thought i messed my interview up because the interviewer was like 'how are you going to be able to afford living expenses down here as we are so close to london' i thought 'screw' this place and rejected them. but the uni was lovely. to be honest the Canterbury campus in medway is a lot better they have mock wards and scrub rooms etc. will let you know how the course goes if i remember lol. what made u do odp? cos like you said there aren't many of them on here
That was a bit of a random question for an interview. Yeah I really liked it when I went for the interview and had a look round the skills labs and stuff. I only used one UCAS choice as I have a daughter and can't move areas.
Wanted to work in healthcare for a while, considered nursing but wasn't 100% sure about it deep down, discovered ODP, did some research and some work shadowing and loved it!
There's a couple of ODP forums I use, haven't seen anyone going to Surrey yet though lol, mainly Edge Hill and Northumbria.

You mentioned you managd to shadow an odp can I ask how you went about arranging this as I haven't a clue where to start! I m also only able to study at Surrey Uni as I have small children and am settled in this area. Would love to hear how you are getting on when you do start (I cant wait until next year!!!) P.S I live Surrey/West Sussex boarder so would be keen to know how you manage with the commute. What sort of things did they ask you in your interview??? Thanks and Good Luck!

Hi Jobbs,

I am starting in September! Ok re: work shadowing, firstly I spoke to one of the ODP Module leaders on the phone about the course - he advised me to contact one of the placement hospitals the uni uses and go in and have a chat to some ODPs. If you email the uni recruitment department and request a list of placement hospitals they should send them out - there are about 20 so should be one convenient for you to visit. I think they must get a lot of people coming in for a chat as the hospital I contacted was more than happy to help. While I was there, I asked if I could come in for some proper shadowing later on and the mentor said it was fine - went back a few months later and got to observe some ops which was great, and talk to a few different ODPs.

I live in Horsham so about 25 miles from Guildford. Luckily my partner works in Guildford so we will commute in together. Our daughter will be going to nursery in Cranleigh which is quite convenient for us. As for placement, I am about 30 minutes away from my preferred hospital, at the moment I'm undecided whether to drive or get the train.

Interview - in the morning there was a literacy and numeracy test, nothing to worry about, just make sure you have practised long division as you will need it to answer some questions but really nothing hard, oh and make sure you are aware of wider NHS issues/health promotions.
The interview itself was quite short, with one tutor and 2 hospital reps, about 6 questions in all. Again, nothing to worry about, as long as you are aware of what the course entails, how you will cope with it, why you want to do it, any particular challenges you will face, you should be fine. It was all pretty friendly and relaxed.

hope that helps! and hopefully see you in 2010!

I'm starting to think I'll be the only one turning up to Keele this year... Student ODPs do seem very hard to find.

HI,

I'm hoping to get a place in the university to study operating department practice in September 2010.I have 6'GCE O'levels and Degree in Business Administration but I am worried that i lack a science subject in my GCE O' Levels.I have impression that if you don't have any prior knowledge of any science subject i wouldn't be offered a place in any University.

However if i am offered a place i would still to struggle to understand the anatomy module because of lack of knowledge of Biology

How true is it?

Cheers

Hi, I'm assuming you're on the course already now? But even so, you should be fine with your anatomy and physiology as there is alot of suuport from the tutors and there are certain books etc that are useful and in simple terms that would explain it all clearly. Hope that helps
Sadia - I'm currently on the course - in my final year (2nd year)
