do you have to be an alcoholic before you start to die?

You start killing yourself from your first drink technically. Sorry :p:

Watch Leaving Las Vegas. It takes Nicolas Cage AGES to die... At least he got to do Elisabeth Shue.

Go to the doctors and ask them to do a blood test if you are worried: Mine once found a raised enzyme (whatever that means?) in my liver when she was looking for something else in a blood test, which was typically attributed with student binge drinking, and I dont even drink that often!

Reply 9

Depends how strong the persons liver is i guess. And other factors too, like weight, general health, if they take anything else, etc.

k thanks ppl

many of those out there "enjoying" getting blocked every weekend, and who justify it by saying "its only once a week" or some other trash, will have some lovely liver cirrhosis to enjoy before they even reach middle age.

when you drink too much, your liver cells (which modify a lot of enzymes) attatch the incorrect carbohydrate groups onto some enzymes. these can be detected and the test is sometimes used by companies to see how many of their staff have drink problems.

i'm not saying you have a drink problem, i reckon that as long as i don't binge too often and don't do spirits every day, i should be fine.

yes, but as I've said before, once you're dead you don't worry about being dead.

It's one of my favourite films ever too... although when asked what my favourite films are, I always forget to mention it, as it's very underrated.

As for this whole thread, it's pretty stupid. The length of time it would take for you to die depends totally on the amount you would be drinking, and also on your metabolism. If you wanted to die that way, it would still take you a long time...

In the newspapers, not too long ago, they mentioned a vodka-drinking competition in Russia where most of the winners were sent to hospital afterwards and the winner actually died. So if you wanted to die, maybe something like bad quality vodka would do the trick.

No dearies, that's death due to alcohol poisoning - that's acute, not chronic abuse.

It can take years and years for cirrhosis to develop to a level which is potentially fatal, but there are so many other things that chronic alcohol abuse (that's every day, or binge drinking, whatever, regularly going over the recommended limit) can do to you:

Fatty change in liver (this means all your nice liver cells get essentially turned into fat cells, making them pretty useless for anything else)
Increased risk of certain types of cancer
Increased risk of coronary heart disease and stroke
Gastric ulcers
Oesophageal varices (nasty)
Damage to skin capillaries

Etc etc. Dying is the least of your worries.
