Choosing an Oxford College

Hey all,

I'm going to be a visiting student from a US university next year. The program I'm coming through has asked if I'd prefer to be in Trinity, New, or Christ Church. From what I can tell, they'd all offer similar quality tutorials in biochemistry (my course). I know that Christ Church and New are substantially bigger, but I'm not really sure what implications that will have.

Are there any big differences between the three, academically or socially? Right now I'm just planning to be assigned, as I don't have a clear preference. Would this be the best choice?

Thanks!

Trinity is smaller so most people know get to know each other quite well/you recognise most people around. Not sure how feasible this would be at New or Christ Church - it's not claustrophobic thought. I guess it just depends on whether you want a smaller community or a larger one.

The food at Trinity is supposedly better than at most other colleges. It is really good, but I've heard that Christ Church food is good too. Oh, you get free unlimited printing at Trinity (if that's at all a factor?)

They are all pretty central.
All are relatively old traditional colleges, with a high public school ratio among British students. All three are beautiful with CC the largest and arguably most impressive. Foodwise I've heard CC is bad, but then the formals are spectacular. All 3 are very sociable, active colleges. Look into the potential tutors and see who you prefer.

Having been to a Christ Church formal hall, I have to report I didn't think the food was outstanding. Good, of course, but not brilliant. (Although I am told their weekly black-tie guest nights are quite something.)

I'm trying to figure out who I would have tutorials with. On the college websites, fellows are listed as Tutorial Fellows, Professorial Fellows, Junior Research Fellows, and College Lecturers. Do all of these people teach tutorials, or only the Tutorial Fellows?
Tutorial Fellows (who are usually permanent faculty) and College Lecturers (who are short-term hires) do the tutorials, this being part of their job; maybe Junior Research Fellows, depends on the terms of their JRF and/or how much they feel like it.

Hi guys,

I'm stuck between these two colleges at Oxford. Could you give me some more advice about what the two colleges are like.

Thank you

WOOSTA :yeah:  :ahee:

I mean, hi :ninja:

Is there anything in particular about Worcester/Woosta you would like to know? Or should I just ramble? :h:
From what I know of colleges, Worcester seems nicer. That said I think you'll have an amazing time wherever you go. Except Merton, where fun goes to die.

Not to sound cliche but whatever feels 'right' hehe. In terms of applications Worcester is by far the most subscribed:

This DOES NOT mean you're less likely to get into Oxford, just that you're less likely to get into Worc.

They're both large colleges, both spacious and pretty, both quite far out... LMH is next to Uniparks though  I'd go visit them both and you'll probably know then just from the feel of it! Check out the accommodation too, that could be a deciding factor.

LMH is absolutely lovely, got huge gardens and tennis courts and guaranteed accommodation for 3 years =D

I've come around a lot to LMH - very nice grounds and nice peaceful location.

If you want some more useful advice though OP, ask more specific questions. What are you looking for? What aspects are important to you?

Lies.
LMH, without being too biased  I'm probably in quite an envious situation for you OP... I'm going for German and Spanish and will be going to Worcester for my German tutes, and to my residential LMH for Spanish.... So you could just do what I did

Seriously though, Worcester has an older feel to it, so if that's important for you then consider that. LMH is a bit out of the way, but it's worth it as there won't be tourists bugging you and it's by parks, as someone else has already said. I don't know the Worcester situation but you're guaranteed accommodation for three years at LMH, which is a big thing for me

Woostarites are also guaranteed 3 years accommodation and we don't get tourists bugging us :nah: At the same time, we're not in the middle of nowhere :p:

Well I guess it's down to personal preference then! That's really good actually, considering it's a central college.

Although it isn't the college I applied to initially, I've grown quite fond of LMH, mainly because I like gardens and floweryness and the punts-and that it apparently has more en suites that other places!

Then again, you might want to choose based on different reasons :P

LMH is very lush, I'll give you that :yep:

Woosta's accommodation is 72% ensuite and with access to good kitchen facilities

Looks like they're both pretty good then  OP, if you can't make your mind up, apply for a dual honours at LMH with German being one of the two, and you'll get the best of both worlds:wink:
If they really are equivalent in appeal, whatever the personal criteria used may be, then the obvious choice is LMH as there's a much smaller chance of getting reassigned to another College, since Worcester is one of the most oversubscribed colleges in the University.
