I can only give you my view as an applicant

I visited both, Mansfield on a study day and Magdalen on an open day

Personally, I felt Mansfield was quite pretty but nothing in comparison to Magdalen and it's stunning grounds.

I also wasn't too fond of the food at Mansfield (pretty disgusting actually), though I'm not sure if this is just because they didn't try because there were lots of Year 12s. I didn't eat at Magdalen so can't comment on that but the dining hall was prettier and the drinks were cheaper in the shop!

I think if I wanted something a little less intimidating id choose Mansfield, but personally I wasn't daunted by Magdalen and just felt it was the place id like to live in

I would say though, that I have two friend who visited Mansfield and loved it and both have decided to apply there! It really depends on what you're looking for!

If you can't visit (because for us three this is really what decided it) then I'd just suggest thinking carefully about whether you want a larger college, bigger grounds, or a small more community feel etc

Sorry if this still seems indecisive! I just don't want to seem biased because I've chosen Magdalen :P

Because of the architecture? I find it hard to believe anyone actually says that unless its a post-pooling/post-rejection 'i didn't even want to go there anyway' type statement. Its often an excuse used to cover other insecurities someone has.

Christchurch is tourist-central which might be worth a consideration (for good or for bad), but then New isn't exactly quiet either. I think there might be a difference in accommodation provision? Is that important to you?

They're pretty similar overall really. As most colleges are.

You're right, there's a big difference in accommodation provision. I would like the option to live in Third Year, so I think I'm going to go for Christ Church. Thanks!

Personally, I'd go for New. I wasn't impressed with Christ Church's food (my poor friend, bless her, kept apologizing throughout formal for the food), and the sheer number of tourists would annoy me. New gets a bit of both (not very good food + tourists), but I don't feel that it's as bad as ChCh.

nexttime mentioned accommodation and that's definitely worth checking out if it matters to you. ChCh houses most of its undergrads on/ near the main site but they have an annexe down Cowley I think (not too far though, just before the Sports Centre). New doesn't guarantee third year accommodation.

Thanks for that! After considering accommodation, I think I'll apply to Christ Church- even if the food is dodgy! I've heard that tourists can be really annoying, but I would like to have the option to live in third year.

Not sure (I don't live in college). I think if you're using what they deem a "silly amount" in a week (i.e. about what I use in half a day  ) you'll start getting letters; but I also think this happens at all colleges. As I said though, I don't live in so someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh no.................

There won't be enough paper in Oxford for all the letters they'll have to write me!

I can't remember if your question was college specific... I'm at merton and I've watched entire tv series over the space of just a few days and I've never heard anything, and its something I'd have thought the uni would be more interested in than college. I think your use would have to be pretty torrential to attract attention (pun intended - use of torrenting sites is the only thing I've seen someone pulled up for).

I'm having a bit of a crisis! I want to apply for law.
I was initially dead set on Corpus Christi, but now I have started to consider Mansfield college.
I am just worried that Corpus was a bit more on the private school side of things (from what I've heard) whereas Mansfield has the same small college feel I like but accepts record numbers of state school students!
I got AAAAB at higher, straight 1's at standard grade and I am predicted high grades for what I'm studying this year.
I went to UNIQ, and I've done further reading and attended courts.

What are the pros and cons of each college?
Can someone advise me which college has the best accommodation? Considering Jesus and Oriel... Going to study physics)

I'm at Mansfield so can't speak for Corpus Christi, but I recently responded to a similar post from someone considering either Magdalen or Mansfield for Law, maybe worth a look:

Mansfield usually takes four Law students. You're right about the state school proportion. However, it also gets more state school applications . I mean, some colleges whose state school proportion looks poor would love to have more of them to choose from. Also, last year 13 Law applicants chose Mansfield as their preferred college and none of them got an offer; the four offers went to candidates who initially applied to other colleges (you're OK on how this works?). Not trying to put you off Mansfield! But it's not really worth using admission stats or related assumptions to try to improve chances. Best to apply to the college that suits you best in terms of location, size, ambiance etc.

Best of luck

This seems a very fair summary. Just on the food though, Mansfield is actually rather super for meals and I'm wondering if the term-time kitchen staff weren't around for the Open Day. Also, as you would have noticed there's a lot of building work at the moment and the kitchens are in Portacabins.

On the other hand, you mention that the dining hall is less pretty than Magdalen. This is true, but it's worse than that cos due to the aforementioned building work you would have been dining in our chapel, which is our bestest most Harry Potter-esque environment. Our real Dining Hall is a far more modest affair :frown:

which oxford colleges have a low application rate for law? And high % intake of state school students ?

If you like Corpus, just apply there  I wouldn't worry about the state/private divide really - I go to a college that supposedly takes a higher proportion of private school students than normal and I've never encountered a snob or rah. The Law tutors at my college certainly couldn't care less which school you went to prior to Oxford.

My advice is it doesn't matter. You can read about the Law faculty's admissions procedure here: http://www.merton.ox.ac.uk/undergraduate/admissions-feedback/law-and-law-law-studies-europe

The moral of the story is the least and most popular colleges all have some re-allocated candidates. So the strategy of trying to apply to the least oversubscribed college doesn't really work for Law. Just apply wherever you think you'd be happiest.

I am going to apply for chemistry, I am sorely tempted to apply to Magdalen, however I am somewhat worried that it would be dominated by Public/Private schooled people and while I'm sure most of them would be very nice people, it is still worrying. I was thinking maybe I should apply for Hertford instead but I think I would prefer Magdalen as a place if I'm honest.
Advice on what I should do?

Apply to Magdalen

Do you know what the split between state and nonstate schooled people is, or at least if there is an abnormally high percentage of non state schooled people there?
