Thinking of applying/choosing an Oxford college? Here's a tip: go about a hundred miles east, and you'll find a beautiful university, though it may be in the middle of nowhere, that has far more intelligent and pretty students than Oxford will ever see =] Some of them even know how to punt the right way (standing on the flat end rather than inside), although the Oxonians have discovered the aluminium punting pole.

Hilarious.

Although I don't quite know why anyone would want to go to Anglia Ruskin.

I'm thinking of applying (currently in Y12 so 2015 entry) for History and German. Politically I'm Conservative and I'd like a college with a good rowing track record, fairly close to the centre of Oxford but I don't mind that much - any ideas for a good college? I was thinking about Magdalen...(:

As far as Oxford stereotypes go, ChCh, Oriel and Trinity are considered fairly conservative. They're all fairly central, although I'm not sure about their rowing records.
Good to see all the would-be Mertonians!

Fenland Poly really isn't worth looking at.

Are you sure about this? Somerville itself doesn't guarantee 3 year accommodation. http://www.some.ox.ac.uk/3344/all/1/Living_in_College.aspx Also, this appears to suggest that only half of the 2nd years will get college accommodation: http://blogs.some.ox.ac.uk/jcr/accomodation/

I might be entirely wrong, but the vast majority of Somerville students I know lived out in second year. Could be just them though.

It has an option for living there 4 3 yrssss cool and awesomeee hope to meet u there next year haha Posted from TSR Mobile

What I meant was that, because of the new ROQ Accomodation, IF you wanted to live in in the second year, you're more likely to be able to than in other colleges where there is no capacity to do so. I understand its not guaranteed and most live out, but the option does exist.

Yup! Haha. Only travelled to Oxford once before and didn't go to that side. Wanted to apply oriel. But my teachers advised against it. They basically have us a list to avoid for international students! What about you what college are you applying to?

Please excuse my barging in on this conversation but I'm curious : ) What are some oxford colleges should international students avoid and why?

No worries. The idea was that many of these colleges have very limited placings for a particular subject for international students. Basically my school informs us on the basis of previous applicants. Some may say its not the case but they've helped some of my borderline seniors get into Oxford. I remember magdalene, baliol, Merton, oriel, Somerville, Harris Manchester, and a few others I can't remember. Just as a disclosure that was for law and again my school could be wrong.

Ooh, I see. Interesting  Anything to try and get an edge and into oxford - I get that

Yeah I feel especially if you're international. It's much more limited. And with the variety of educational backgrounds, you have to make sure you stand out wherever you are. I feel jealous of British students sometimes. :frown:

Nah I'm from Singapore. Well if I didn't hear wrong it was Somerville. But then again my school could be wrong. So nothing to worry! I'm sure we will all get our interviews and offers! I am ambivalent about st Hilda's cause I guess it's not as classical as I would've liked. And there are so few applicants. But it may end up being beneficial!

I highly doubt it. Last I checked, the colleges don't have "quotas" for international students - they simply take as many as they think are good enough (except for Medicine, which has a Uni-wide quota).

I know as many as 2-3 international students (possibly more, because I only really know the people from my country and a few others) for Law in a single college in a single year, and then none the year after, and then perhaps 1 or 2 thereafter. The numbers really fluctuate year on year. To put it very bluntly, I think that the notion of international quotas is inaccurate. What a school thinks is "borderline" might not actually be "borderline" for Oxford, because Oxford takes into consideration much more than grades. You can have fantastic grades but do badly in the interview or the written test.

Do not worry about college allocations. Just do your best for the interview/ LNAT.
Any Christ church applicants?? I haven't come across any yet :frown: . I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, to be honest :P is christ church good for international applicants??

Maybe try posting in the ChCh thread? I'm sure there are applicants this year - have you seen the stalking list yet?

ChCh is about as good as any other college for international applicants. There isn't really a college that magically favours internationals or local students.

Hilda's is lovely - it doesn't look like your typical vision of Oxbridge, but some parts are still relatively old and stately home-esque: http://www.bucksmore.com/wp-content/gallery/location-sthildas/front_0.jpg

It has a well stocked library, being a former women's college at a time when women weren't allowed to use the Bodleian, and it's fairly central, just a short way past Magdalen. http://www.daisydunn.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/4880_661795724269_36812591_39417149_6849299_n.jpg

It also backs out onto the river: http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/03/98/76/b5/st-hilda-s-college.jpg
