...but ultimately isn't that what the admissions tutors do?

...About the same person... doing the same thing! All you've determined is that two particular students that at least used to be at Somerville were not very good at giving a tour on one particular occasion.

I disagree with Pak that first impressions mean anything significant at all. I'd focus on more objective criteria, however arbitrary. e.g. how you didn't like the accommodation!

Oh, I know that those things were unimportant and don't matter, but I'm just so indecisive that I had to make a decision somehow! (I personally didn't base my decision on the people that I met).

True it can be difficult.
Can anyone tell me what the accommodation at Regents Park is like? Is there a sink etc in each room? Are the bathrooms communal? Are the rooms fairly cozy or a bit more spacious?

Thanks

You will definitely have a sink in your room, and probably a communal bathroom. Based on a random sample of one, your room will probably be a nice medium size, neither tiny nor grand.

Hello folks, I've decided to apply to Oxford but am now stuck on which college I should apply to. I want to study German and would rather be at a college with more people rather than less, but with a favourable successful application rate! Being closer to the centre is preferable. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance!

I'm in the same boat as I'm also applying for German (MSt modern languages) though I'm not so fussed about colleges; I'll be lucky to get in as I only have a good 2:1 in law and German and a first in legal German.

It meant the Times was unable to report the hundreds of bodies in store in Liverpool because the gravediggers and crematoria workers were on strike.

That was the state of late 1970s industrial relations.

The one thing it didn't have an impact on was the newspaper buying public. The Times sold a quarter fewer papers in the late 1970s than it does today. The Daily Telegraph then sold four times as many papers as The Times and both The Sun and the Daily Mirror ten times as many as The Times. Moreover an awful lot of The Times's sale was institutional.

The Times give a lot of copies away though, on planes, trains, in hotels, etc - I would question how accurate their paper copy sales figures really are. (This also applies to the Telegraph.)

All of the broadsheets have these issues but advertisers are wise to them.

There is no doubt however that Murdoch created a market for the Times where none previously existed in the 1980s by selling the Times for 10p. By doing so, he attracted a much younger demographic than the Telegraph. If you look at copies of the Times from before Murdoch injected life into it, the editorial staff really did believe they were producing a "newspaper of record". All of the lively journalism was in the Sunday Times. Pravda might have had better feature writing.

In theory power rests with the colleges and so if the university intends to implement a system a college does not like, the college can withdraw from the central admissions system. That was the threat in the late 1970s which derailed the university plan to go mixed on a staged basis by college over several years and resulted in a headlong rush. Colleges were not prepared to be last in that particular queue.

The colleges have agreed to the non-aggression pact whereby none will implement a change to admissions arrangements without the support of the majority of the colleges.
Where do you get your information from?

Look at their distance from the department building and check

Make sure a college offers your subject.

I would look on the Oxford website to see which colleges offer your course, and then look at those colleges' websites. Make a list of what is important to you (e.g centre of Oxford or further out, old buildings or new etc) and then pick a few colleges which seem to fit that, and then look into them in more detail.

When I was looking at colleges I think I saw that Brasenose was quite competitive. I applied open for chemistry, and was assigned Somerville, and it was great, and the numbers were good.
Hey everyone,

I'm taking my Masters in Cambridge now and applying to Oxford for PhD position. And as I'm really short in time I can't afford to spend days researching all the colleges.. So I thought I might ask for your help.

I'm in Pembroke (Cambridge Pembroke  ) and I love every bit of it: atmosphere(relaxed (but not too much) and friendly), position (3 mins to centre), age (3rd oldest).. everything.

So if you could share on which of the Oxford colleges are any way similar to Cambridge's Pembroke - that would be great!

Thanks a lot!

This differs between colleges a lot. Gowns are mandatory for matriculation, exams, and at some colleges for formals.
