Choosing an Oxford College

I really like Trinity Oxford (that's why I chose it), but I also really like Merton. Its absolutely stunningly beautiful and the food is supposed to be great too (only college better food than at trinity). I've heard Chirst Church to be the equivalent, but I think Merton (and Trinity) is way nicer.

^^that's why I chose Merton

As far as food goes, I think postgrad colleges are generally better than undergrad ones. Maybe because us oldies are a bit more discerning? :p: I had lunch at Magdalen once and it was rank.

Yeah, but most of ChCh's PMs are virtually prehistoric - Douglas-Home being the most recent??
Anyway, as far as Tony Blair being at St. John's - it wasn't his first choice. Balliol turned him down. We did the same to Clinton. See - we're so awesome that we can turn down future PMs and presidents.

Well.....Chris Huhne went to Magdalen! Bo selecta!
Most of the colleges are **** to be honest.

He's my MP, my Dad likes to mention that I'm at Oxford every time he goes to see him. We can claim Boris Johnson...

yay Boris
I am thinking of applying to Magdalen with a Choral Scholarship for 2009. Can anyone from there tell me what it is like please??

Although our JCR would rather not... thankfully.
Then again, Ted Heath: Prime Minister, Organ Scholar... and he also ran Pantry for a while (far more important - but remembered by fewer people, it seems).
David Cameron...

David Cameron...

The best reason to go nowhere near Brasenose.

But everyone loves William Hague! Entertaining even if he is a Tory...

I like it, nice buildings, pretty good accommodation (people complain about the first year rooms, but they're really not that bad). People tend to be friendly, it's quite big so there's plenty of variety in people terms. You get plenty of people who are very into their subjects and work, but the college is very relaxed I've found about work despite being 2nd in the Norrington table.

I tend to find with Magdalen, even more than say Christ Church, that people barely know the people even in their own year. It's all yeeeah never been quite sure if he's a 1st or a 2nd year.... Whereas in my college I probably knew the names of everyone in my year by the end of freshers week and I'd say that even being a 3rd year I know upwards of 40% of the freshers. Being in such a big college, where the accomodation is so spread out means you don't just bump into people nearly as much. That said, I love all the wildernessy park-ness around the back of the deer park by the fellows gardens.
i think it's definitely true that in smaller, more close-knit colleges people get to know each other better. in brasenose, for example, all of the freshers and most of the 3rd and 4th years essentially live in 2 quads, and so everyone is so close to everyone and you inevitably end up bumping into people more often. i showed a friend around brasenose who was thinking of applying, and she said that in other colleges it didn't seem as close knit, and when people showed her around they didn't know many of the people whereas i know most of the people i'd say, certainly almost everyone in 1st year.
It makes quite a difference if people have to live out after first year - I think living in college continuously throughout the year makes a big difference to the atmosphere at Anne's, especially as it means eating together a lot.
Trinity (Cambridge) does NOT have the best academic rating at all. It is, however, by far the richest, and the largest, and the most 'prestigious'. That doesn't necessarily translate academically, though, so please don't make the mistake of thinking the more famous the better. Not true.
i was thinking primarily of maths, which it really does have a reputation as being the best in the whole world- is it not really true?

It has the largest intake for maths, by some way, and gets quite a lot of the IMO team, but for maths overall isn't outstanding compared to other Cambridge colleges.

Well you'll be doing the same degree whichever College you go to. I think it gained the reputation for being the 'Maths college' the same way Downing has become the 'Law College' and G&C has become the 'Medicine College'. The intake for maths may be slightly higher and it's a popular college choice among mathematicians.
