Well... I reccomend you go and get some work experience, because, it really depends how you see it. I like the idea of being a pharmacist personally, and enjoyed my work experience.

Pharmacy as a career or pharmacy as a degree? Or both?

Reply 4

degree wise

I pretty much enjoy it, well a lot of it, apart from Natural Products. There's a lot of chemistry in the course. Check out the course at each uni and see what you like.

Sometimes it bores me to death! There is a lot of good stuff and I think most degrees have their boring elements to them, so I just put up with it.

I think what makes a lecture interesting is primarily how good the lecturer is, I wish I had some of my lecturers recored to send me to sleep at night believe me!

Hey, I'm at Manchester MPharm too!

Um again it does depend on what you're interested in. If you like chemistry and think studying the medicines themselves would be interesting then look no further than pharmacy.

I'm doing Pharmacology next year. Don't know how much it differs from Pharmacy

well pharmacy is of course vocation so involves more training in stuff such as pharmacy practice and giving advice/distribution. pharmacology is mostly mechanism of action and can't be used to practice pharmacy.

i didn't know you were doing that, sounds cool.

I'm not quite sure if it's the right thing to do (especially given the hell I'm having with Pharm revision right now) but I felt it was more useful scientifically than Mechanisms of Disease which was my alternative, but which I felt was almost a waste of a part II at this place, seeing as I'll cover all that stuff in Clinical anyway.

Arghhhhh I HATE Pharmacology. Have my exam this afternoon - far too much to remember.

So yeah anyways, pharmacology is a big part of a pharmacy degree (30/120 credits this year whereas only 20 were to do with pharmacy practice).

Two friends of mine did Pharmacy at Aston, both say its pretty damn hard and they got straight A's at A levels in maths/physics/chem so i believe them. The course is apparently very interesting, but not so sure about the job. One of them now is a locum, he much prefers a different work place and the variety it offers.

I'm thinking of doing Pharmacy but the thought of community pharmacy comes across as an advanced retail assistant in medicine-- they're undervalued and much of their skills & expertise become redundant. They are far more capable. I hear the government are looking to change this and bring in more responsibilities.
Hospital Pharmacy looks the place to be where you consult/advise doctors etc, but pay is much less. Industry seems to be pretty limited as surely a pharmaceutical/pharmacology graduate would be more suited? Maybe i'm wrong.

I'm still doubtful whether i'll go ahead with this. The degree looks ideal but I'm not so sure about the job.

Also apparently two new Pharmacy schools opening soon? Won't there been an over supply?

Any subject is boring if you want it to be, just as any subject is interesting if you want it to be.
