Hello all i am currently in the process of joining the royal marines, I have my psychometric test on wednesday, i know its a stupied question but its really bugging me, what is the quickest way to work this example question 40 x 0.75 = ? thanks

Take off a quarter? :confused: I'd turn it into fractions, because that's how I "see" numbers - I wouldn't even need to work it out if I did that, it's an obvious pattern.

Or have I missed something?

Or .... what PJ said while I was typing! :biggrin:
Harder example maybe? I instantly knew that without having time to think about how i would think about it.

I work out stuff like this in a slightly odd way.

First, I change it to 4 x 7.5

Then to 2 x 15
0.75 is 3/4

40/4 = 10

10*3 = 30.

Think of it as 3/4. Divide it by 4, which is 10. Times it by 3 = 30.

I'd do 10 x 0.75 which is 7.5. Times that by 4 = 30.
i did 4 x 0.75 = 3 then 3 x 10

40/10 = 4

4x7.5 = 30

Edit:

40/4 = 10

10x3 = 30

is far more simple.
I did 40/4, then multiply by three. Probably would work out anything harder in the same way.

I'd just notice that 0.75 is the same as 34\dfrac{3}{4}, and then either (a) just realise that it's 30, or (b) realise that 14×40=10\dfrac{1}{4}\times 40 = 10 and then multiply by 3.

40/4 = 10
10x3 = 30

At least that doesn't involve any decimals which are easier to slip up on, compared to integers.
I just thought '30'

Dam!! I knew it was something simple!! This i what happens when you dont keep up maths... you foget it! Thanks good its all coming back to me!! :biggrin::biggrin:
I would do it like .50 of 40 is 20 and then .25 is 10 = 30.

Much easier than anything else to me :smile:
Divide by 4 * by 3
