C1 question.

Hey,

I'm stuck on some C1 questions from Edexcel, i am revising C1 and have forgotten how to do this. The questions are from the new C1 textbook:

Ex 5C, questions 6 and 7.

(6) The lines y=xy = x and y=2x5y = 2x-5 intersect at the point A. Find the equation of the line with gradient is 25\frac{2}{5} that passes through point A. (Hint: Solve equations simultaneously).

(7) The lines y=4x10y = 4x-10 and y=x1y = x-1 intersect at the point T. Find the equation of the line with gradient -23\frac{2}{3} that passes through point T. Write your answer in form ax + by +c = 0, where a, b and c are integers.

I understand the concept of what you need to be doing, where you sub in y as 0 and find x and use y - y1 = m(x - x1) in order so find an equation with the given gradient, since that's what that part of the chapter is about. However when I do the simultaneous equations, i get the answer wrong.

Please help.

Post your working then. The simultaneous equations are not hard in these examples, so you're probably just making an algebra slip up somewhere.

for (6) I did:

y=2x5 y = 2x - 5
x=2x5x = 2x - 5
x=5x = 5 therefore, A = (5,0)

yy1=m(xx1)y - y_1 = m(x - x_1)
y0=25(x5)y - 0 = \frac{2}{5} (x - 5)
y=25x105y = \frac{2}{5}x - \frac{10}{5}

however the answer is y=25+3y = \frac{2}{5} + 3

and for (7)
4x10=x14x - 10 = x-1
4x9=x4x - 9 = x
3x=93x = 9
x=3x = 3

yy1=m(xx1)y - y_1 = m(x - x_1)
y0=23(x3)y - 0 = -\frac{2}{3} (x - 3)
y=23x+63y = -\frac{2}{3}x + \frac{6}{3}
3y=2x+63y = -2x + 6
2x+3y6=02x + 3y - 6 = 0

however the right answer is 2x+3y12=02x + 3y - 12 = 0

how is the point A (5,0) when it is on the line y=x :/

The bit in red is incorrect. What makes you think the y co-ordinate is zero?

if x=5 then put that into y=x and y=5 too
so:
y-5=2/5(x-5)

so y= 2/5x + 3

:biggrin:

aaaah thank you xD i knew i made silly mistake somewhere

Why -12 at the end?
